At this point, I sorta suspect that the primary reason (and maybe the only reason) Jessie was the "Queen Bee" of the high school, is that her mother pressured her into it.

I think there is a good chance you are correct. She certainly seemed eager to dump the job once she found what she judged to be a worthy contender for it.

Horny sailors are a limited pool?

Well if you eat too many along a route, shipping will start avoiding it as cursed. It's like overfishing. ;)

As Artemis says in one of the "Wearing the Cape"* books when she's considering strolling home through some of the less salubrious parts of New Orleans (perfectly safe, being as she's a vampire):
I could have misted, or if I was feeling peckish, walked home, maybe collecting a rapist or two on the way. Although that wasn't as easy as it used to be - humans are good at pattern recognition, and the evil-intentioned were acquiring an aversion to young ladies walking alone.
Artemis sort of reminds me of Suzie, actually.

* Wearing the Cape, the first, is available free for Kindle. They're self-published, but they're pretty good YA/superhero stuff.

In traditional Russian folk tales, Baba Yaga lives in a hut in a clearing in the woods, and the hut stands on a pair of chicken legs (and often turns this way and that).

The fact that Ba'bra Yaga's house exhibits no such legs, is obvious proof that she did something terrible to them and must therefore be a horrible witch. Right?

I also recommend the "Wearing the Cape" series by Marion G. Harmon; they are (in order):

A Superhero Story (the link above goes to a copy with the first ~13 chapters of this book)
     Villains, Inc.
     Young Sentinels
     Small Town Heroes

Bite Me - Big Easy Nights is an Artemis stand alone novel that takes place between the first and second books. There is also a short story Omega Night in The Good Fight anthology. I find he has the most logical handling of superheroes in society.

Neither of them said anything to distinguish maternal from paternal grandparents. So are her mother's parents the only grandparents who were a part of Jessie's life? Perhaps they didn't approve of their son's marriage.
Dave wrote:Would that mean that evil, insane Grandma would be known as Crone Jawford?
Or possibly Crone Crawfish.
DilyV wrote:Poor Jessie. Something else too... If Jessie has taken to talking to her mother that way, home life can't be good at all. No wonder she acted the way she did at first until Atsali's act of kindness and sympathy. Her home life must be a living hell.
The "you're too good for friends" thing pretty much guarantees that her childhood was less than ideal. It would mainly be just her, her siblings, and her mother.

Them being out of their bikinis might cause additional problems.

Yes.
Brasten wrote:On a scale from "Baba Yaga on a good day" to "Baba Yaga on a bad day" how Evil would one rate granny?
Perhaps something a little off the scale?

Well, Jessie did that. Does she count?

It's probably squatting at the moment so people can get in and out.

Okay then, on a scale from Boba Yaga to Boba Yoga.

... how about we send you a copy of the tape?

Shades of 'Bad Company' the good one, with Fishburne, Barkin, and Langella.

The first assignment Lawrence is given involved a certain bit of video filming.
Later, as they describe the scene to the client (Spalding Grey) he expresses concern over the content, until they mention he should, perhaps, have a copy of the tape for himself....

"Yesss, perhaps I should..."

A weird thought I had...

What if grandpa had an older brother - named "Aaron"?

"You should never run from the voices in your head. That's how you give them power." - Jin
