Looks like it runs in the family. Thankfully it looks like this one will break the cycle.

Oh dear. Washing the family laundry by the pool.

I was going to say something about fish wives shouting, but never mind.

Sometimes, when you force-feed your kids a diet of stories about how Your People Are Better Than Those Other Folk, they swallow it, and become arrogant.

And, sometimes, they actually bother to do their own research, and learn the truth.

Grandma Gotlieb sounds to possibly be related to Thessalonike (aka Alexander the Great's really nutty and evil sister and mermaid of lore), at least personality-wise.
The common Greek mythos would also explain why there is disdain toward Atsali.

Holy Shit... I didn't know that Joan Crawford was a friggin mermaid! That looks just like her! Paul wins the innernetz today with his depiction of Mommy Dearest!

Remember! NO! WIRE! HANGARS!!!
You know that light at the end of the tunnel?

Yeah... it's a bullet. Sorry.

What say I fire up my TransDimensional Portal, round up a platoon of Wapsiforumites, and we crash this shindig? Most of us should get translated into apropos Mythic/Para form. Yours truly will actually assume the body of a blocky 80s style robot, because that's how I normally explore parallel Earths. I'm sure we'll mostly be seen as undesirables to Mama Tuna.

I just remembered a joke;
Why do they cut the heads off of sardines?
So they don't bite each other in the can.

Now normally I'd take "grandma was evil," as simple teenage hyperbole and take in to account "insane" as being the driving factor behind any "evil" seeming tendencies. However this being Wapsi Square and deep in the everyday paranormal... On a scale from "Baba Yaga on a good day" to "Baba Yaga on a bad day" how Evil would one rate granny?

OK so Grandpa left, because Grandma was fruitcake with arsenic frosting, but why did Dad leave? Because Mom is only slightly less toxic than Grandma?

So... Specism + territorialism?
(I.e. Mermaids are better than sirens, and there's no way I'll let another predator on My turf...)

(Bonus points if Grandpa left Grandma for a siren - inasmuch as I don't condone separation to begin with... Then it adds bitter resentment to the mix...)

Perhaps Gramps was an incubus?

I suppose it's too much to expect Grandma to be a character we've seen already?

Some forms of insanity are heritary, some are learned, and some develop due to stress. As an extra F.U. to neurofunction, sometimes it's two or more of the above.

But, as my grandfather used to say, "You can either use it [a disability] as an excuse or you can try to overcome it." It sounds a bit harsh, but due to the fact he said in response to someone accusing him of faking when he shakily stood from his scooter to snag something off of the top shelf,I'm pretty sure he implied that the latter option meant doing the best you could to deal with it.

Mama inherited a good chunk of Granmama's character... nice to see Jess is not following suit.
