Let's see . . . Nadette just spent how long watching her love perform vigorous physical activity . . .

Are we sure that's freak-out the little stinkweed is smelling?

Anyone else find Castela's apparent sense of smell in this a bit more interesting? She can clearly smell pheromones, but to what range of emotions can she smell? I have to wonder when we're finally going to get to a point where they're going to need third party consultation on her development.

I'm guessing she got a vision or something about Atsali... Maybe Atsali gets really badly hurt as a result of her being in an athletic activity, or she accidentally hurts someone.

Maybe Nadette isn't into athletic girls? Which is too bad, because, well...

You ever see a woman with a toned body? A girl with a six pack is hot. And for those who drink beer, which I do not, I'm sure a girl with a six pack, holding a six pack, may be hotter still.

Or maybe she's concerned that her girlfriend will burn so much fat that her boobs will shrink?

Well, she's had them long enough to learn how to balance. That's plausible, right?

Speaking of large breasts, I should, as a joke, try to order one of the 8 ball shirts for my sister in law. Heh, my brother will think it's funny, at least.

And the Pickle combines her superhuman insight and senses with childish directness and gets to the heart of the matter! Let's see how Nad' responds.

It's fairly clear that, thanks to her plant heritage, Castella possesses a sense of smell that exceeds that of most living creatures. With her intelligence and Blackthorn wisdom, this enables her to read most of the people around her like books. It's like Tina's ability to read auras and other dimensional information about people. The two of them, together, could probably figure out someone all the way down to their chromosomes.

I don't think that Nadette's worries are specifically about her girlfriend being on the flight team. She looks to have been getting all worked up for a good long while before Atsali ever got the news that the team wants her. The trouble seems to have started with the field hockey, and to have continued with the skateboarding, and now on into the flight team acceptance. The common thread may be sports, whether as part of a team (hockey and flying) or solo (skating). So, some general ideas:

1) She thinks of competitive sports as dangerous and is afraid of Atsali getting hurt or hurting somebody. That was certainly at least part of what had her upset with the field hockey incident.

2) She's worried about Atsali's greater confidence and active lifestyle pushing the two of them apart. Nadette may prefer more sedate activities (or more intimate active activities) and avoids the sorts of things that Atsali is now getting into. Or she might be seeing—correctly or not—a change in Atsali's personality and isn't sure that the two of them will still be as compatible together. She might even be realising that the mental image she had of Atsali isn't as accurate as she thought it was, and now isn't sure just who her girlfriend actually is anymore.

3) She's worried that Atsali's interest in sports is a sign of something wrong with Atsali. Nadette might think that it is some negative aspect of Atsali's heritage showing itself, or maybe that there's something emotionally or psychologically off about Atsali's new interests.

4) She doesn't want to have Atsali spending more time doing other things with other people without her. The enthusiastic way in which the guys on the flight team reacted to joining Atsali for a night out might not reassure Nadette much, either.

5) She has had some sort of a disturbing vision at some point, and is worried that what Atsali is doing is part of the start of whatever bad events she foresaw. She's said in the past that she has trouble “seeing” things about Atsali, so anything that she may have seen would likely have been some sort of very vague foreboding, giving her just enough to worry about but not enough to convincingly warn Atsali about or act on.

6) It's not really anything to do with what Atsali is doing, but rather is some quirk of Nadette's (or generally ursamorphs') nature. Nadette is going through puberty as well, and it may be that her own hormones are calling to her to be more protective of Atsali or to be more clingy to her or something else.

7) Something else is going on in Nadette's life that has her upset. A rough patch in her relations with Berdine, news that her family is moving to Okinawa, a strong crush on somebody else which has Nadette feeling guilty, she accidentally got herself pregnant, whatever.

8) Any combination of the above, or none at all.

I can't believe nobody has commented on the passage of time noted in this comic. Pickle is 8, that means Atsali and Nadette are 16-17 and juniors in school. M is 33-34 (but still looks 27), Shelly is still 80K+ :D I think Jaqui was older than M by a year or two, and then there's Jet. :o aging supermodel.

Pickle says she's eight . . . kids of that age are prone to "almost" eight . . . only six months to go . . .

Maybe she's just a bit freaked out. First time seeing her go real "predatory" in a sense as opposed to the nerdy goofball who's always insecure about her past? I dunno, having a hard time reading what's going on really.

On the other hand, there could have been that much lapse of time "hidden" in the strip events recently. In fact, there may be indirect evidence to that effect.

We've seen a whole lot of "Atsali and Nadette" sketches on the site (and eBay) lately, and I can't imagine that so many photogenic cutie-couple moments could have happened in just a week or two! :D
