Tales of the First Day of April.

Post by Fairportfan »

Setting the scene: 31 March, 1979 - Fairport Convention had just finished their farewell tour (the band reformed in 1993, and played reunion gigs in between and continues tothis day).

They were crashing with friends somewhere in Oxfordshire, as i recall the story - friends who had houses right next door to each other.  Simon Nicoll was staying in one house, and Dave Swarbrick and his wife were next door.  A bunch of them stayed up late, solving the problems of the universe over a few bottles of Scotch.  Simon eventually wandered next door to his crash space, but Swarb and his host apparently stayed up a bit longer, and opened at least one more bottle.

Swarb had been talking about the farm he'd bought, up in Scotland, where he was going to retire and be a country gentleman.  It sounded very nice.

When Simon woke up, he remembered what day it was.  A pickup was rigged on the upstairs phone, a line was run to the stereo downstairs so everyone could hear, a cassette was set recording ... and Simon called next door, asked for Swarb, and masqueraded as a Scottish cop.

(The label on The Cropredy Box - a recording of their 30th anniversary concert at the 92 Cropredy Festival, whence cometh this recording - says "Caution: Contains Explicit Swarbrick".  This is NOT Safe For Work, though it's bnasically just a few words beginning with "F".)

Without further ado, i give you Simon Nicoll and Dave Swarbrick in "April Fool".  (t may load a bit slowly, but it's worth listening to.)

After calling Swarb to the phone, his wife ran next door to bring word of this disaster ... it's been said that she is the one heard laughing the loudest at the end.
Not even duct tape can fix stupid. But it can muffle the noise.

I could never hold a straight face (or voice) long enough to do that sort of thing.

This better not be a joke, though. I'm tuning into National Geographic to see if the boys will be on...
