Hmm... Ms Anderson is asking "with trepidation seeing Miss Gilchrist is involved"? What, for fear of what might happen if Castela got too upset?
More, I suspect, a matter of "Uh oh. Based on history to date, this young lady can stir up a crisis even while quietly taking a nap. She's a catalyst for chaos, and maybe the last thing a destabilized young lady like Briar should be sufficient with right now."
I love the idea of Briar making model sailing ship "using traditional methods" but also making it fly. That begs the question "whose tradition?" and brings to mind the fantastic steampunk technologies of the "Girl Genius" universe.
Briar is a Spark (or, at the very least, a Madgirl).

I just now caught the "Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" joke!
Applause, applause for clever!
So THAT's why the name kept tingling at the back of my mind!!!
Looking up the movie's wiki, I immediately notice it stars Conrad Veidt, star of 1928's The Man Who Laughs and is generally credited as the character who inspired the appearance of the Joker.

1) She knows that Castela has a good bit of destructive potential. Even if she doesn't know all of the details, she's at least seen a demonstration.
2) Castela's been involved in other various bizarre incidents and shenanigans. Some of which probably resulted in much paperwork for Bryn to fill out.
3) Castela is the last little baby of Bryn's girlfriend, and might possibly even be a future step-daughter.
4) Possibly the most terrifying of all, Castela's a teenaged girl.
Why wouldn't Bryn be trepidatious?

She may see the world in an extreme version of German Expressionistic cinematography.
