This is a two-part story (reprinting from the Misfile forum). First part posted at 1700 15 December 2012; second part just composed.
================================
PART THE FIRST:
Well, i was going to be eating left-over potroast (and carrots and potatoes), and cooking fifteen-bean soup in the crockpot.
Unfortunately, i
A) forgot/failed to notice that Helen had unplugged the crockpot in order to use the popcorn popper last night, and that, consequently, the crockpot wasn't plugged in when i turned it on
and
B) forgot that the potroast was in the oven reheating (our microwave died a while ago and we can't afford a new one yet)
And didn't remember either for a couple of hours.
After an hour or so i went to check on the soup and realised about the crockpot and plugged it in ... but it was another half-hour or more before Kate said (in passing) "What's in the oven?"
And the answer to that was "Dessicated potroast/veggies and carbonised gravy."
So i made myself a big bowl of popcorn.
So far, since 7AM yesterday, i have consumed one large bag of peanut M&Ms, one pound of frozen baby limas, one package of shrimp ramen, one small pot of rice (one cup pre-cooked; cooked in canned chicken broth with butter added) and one medium bowl of popcorn.
Oh - and two two-ounce-or-so chunks of Monterey Jack cheese.
There have also been a couple of cups of milk and some cans of Dr Pepper.
And i'm not really hungry, though i might go back for the rest of the brick of Monterey Jack while i wait for the bean soup to finish.

PART THE SECOND:
The soup has been consumed (well, some of it; the leftovers filled a decent-size refrigerator storage container to the brim).
It was delicious.
The fifteen-bean soup* package calls for the addition of a 14-ounce can of diced tomatoes, the juice of one lemon, chili powder, garlic and ham or smoked sausage.
I used Ro*tel diced tomatoes with chilies - one 10 oz can with lime and cilantro, half a can of "original". Skipped the lemon juice and the chili powder.
Used garlic powder in place of actual garlic.
Tossed in the bone from our pre-Thanksgiving ham, which had a lot of meat still on it. After it had cooked for several hours in the crockpot, i fished out the bone and peeled all the meat off it, gave the bone to the dog and put the meat back in the pot.
It was seriously good - Kate agreed completely.
One thing i'll be changing next time - the recipe calls for two quarts of water (i used canned chicken broth). That's eight cups.
I used seven cups of liquid - four cans of broth plus half-a-cup of water.
Next time i'm only using six cups ... Kate and i agreed that it wasn't thick enough.
(I added some Texas Pete hot sauce to mine, BTW)

* Some of the fifteen "beans" are actually peas or lentils, but, hey...

Not even duct tape can fix stupid. But it can muffle the noise.
