Well, I mean the Trump/Hillary campaigns. I've heard so much crap, I want to feed both of them to a bunch of hamsters.

You just reminded me that I didn't check Questionable Content for an update.
Also, Trump won, which means I now have to listen to Hillary supporters bitching and moaning about how horrible a person he is (because apparently the shit she's already done is perfectly fine).

Re: More Stuff
Think of it this way. Hillary supporters have to listen to puffed-up trumpers gloating, and other people who think they both sucked have to deal with both.
Everyone has to deal with bullshit one way or another.

Re: More Stuff
Yeah, my sister is complaining about it already, saying Trump is going to somehow nullify the Supreme Court's decision that gay marriage is legal. I don't remember ever hearing that a president could do something like that, and not only that, but people have been forgetting this whole time that something like that would require cooperation with Congress.
There is no such thing as a science experiment gone wrong.
Re: More Stuff
What one Supreme Court can decide, another Supreme Court can later un-decide, when hearing another case. This has certainly happened in the past. Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896 upheld racial segregation laws (the "separate but equal" doctrine) and was later overturned by the decision in Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 ("separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.")Alkarii wrote:Yeah, my sister is complaining about it already, saying Trump is going to somehow nullify the Supreme Court's decision that gay marriage is legal. There is already one vacancy on the Supreme Court. It is quite likely that another Justice will retire (or die) during the next four years.
Trump has promised to choose appointees for the court who will (to use a very specific example) "automatically" overturn the precedent in "Roe vs. Wade" - the case which set the rule that states cannot outlaw or unreasonably restrict first-trimester abortions. Trump cannot dictate or declare or order that such an overruling of precedent take place, but he can certainly nominate judges whose record strongly suggests that they would do so if a suitable case were brought before the court.
The same is true of same-sex marriage. Trump will likely have the opportunity to shift the court's balance to one which would favor overturning "Obergefell v. Hodges" and thus allow individual states to once again outlaw same-sex marriage.
There is no guarantee that either of these things will happen, but there's no guarantee that they won't.
Re: More Stuff
Ah, I forgot about that vacancy, probably because I was only able to sleep for a little less than three hours... And I'm also not feeling good. Stomach issues and such.
Still, though, he may be able to get that through, anyway. I really wish, though, that they'd settle the damn issue on abortions, because I'm so sick of hearing about it.

Both the senate and the house are majority republican. Two out of three branches of the government are now republican, and the third hangs in the balance.

United Kingdom: Brexit is the stupidest, most self-destructive thing any nation can do for itself.
United States: Oh yea? Here, hold my beer...

Seriously, though. We've got an idiot in the white house. Honestly, that was gonna happen regardless of who got in there this time 'round. But he's nucking futs enough to actually declare war if Russia pulls another Crimea, so Putin probably won't be 'oops'ing his way through the rest of the NATO-allied nations for the next four years, simply because he realizes that Trump is crazy enough to pull the damn trigger.
On the downside, he got a Republican majority in both House and Senate, which is... less favorable. Having said that, his Senatorial majority is by one seat. I'm sure at least Ted Cruz (Texas) will be willing to give him the middle finger if Trump actually tries any of his racist BS, so Congress will be effectively deadlocked, preventing any of that crap from actually being enacted. Because, yanno... The President is in the Executive, not the Legislative, branch of government. This means he CANNOT pass or create laws, only enforce them.. This is a point people keep forgetting. The power to create and pass laws lies with Congress. And congressmen know that if they actually sign off on any racist BS, they are so NOT going to get reelected. Expect a whole bunch of 'abstains' from the Republican side, so the Democratic 'HELL NO' votes carry through.

Well, there is that, I suppose. Which really seems to negate any concerns I'd had regarding Trump's platform.
However, I'd heard/read that Putin was actually hoping Trump would win, because Trump wants to stomp IS into chunky salsa just as badly as he (Putin) does.
Edit: Is there any truth to that?

Support from Putin, no matter what the excuse is, is not a good thing. Look up... I think it was called "Facing Putin". I think it was a national geographic show? Not sure.Alkarii wrote:Well, there is that, I suppose. Which really seems to negate any concerns I'd had regarding Trump's platform.

Granted, ISIS is needing to get whacked, for humanity's sake if for no other reason, but Congress has the power of the purse. Trump can't go cowboy without funding that Congress needs to give him. And there's enough financial conservatives in the Republican party that he's going to need to really sell it, even to his own party. Since he basically brute-forced his way into the White House and pissed off said Republicans in the process (and thereby proving that with enough money, you CAN in fact buy your way into the White House), they're going to be a lot less sympathetic than with Bush Jr.
But more significantly, Trump isn't going to put up with BS from Putin, and is crazy enough to ask Congress for a Declaration of War. And with a Republican majority in both sides of Congress... he may very well get it. Which means Putin will be consolidating his position over the next four years instead of expanding into the rest of the Ukraine, and basically sitting back and letting Trump take all the flack for blowing the hell out of ISIS. Which, again, goes back to the truism that has been in effect since WW II: if there's a problem, let America deal with it, and then complain about it afterward.

We might have had fewer controversial/illegal executive decrees, or whatever those are called...

Don't think he really spent that much, as these things go. Trump did much less television advertising, over the whole campaign.ShneekeyTheLost wrote: Since he basically brute-forced his way into the White House and pissed off said Republicans in the process (and thereby proving that with enough money, you CAN in fact buy your way into the White House), they're going to be a lot less sympathetic than with Bush Jr.
I think we're in deep shit, but I don't think Trump won by throwing more money into campaigning.
As far as whacking ISIS, whatever the merits, I don't see the Republicans in power, or their supporters, voting to draft their grandkids to accomplish that. And my impression is that Trump does not much care what Putin does in Syria. Or in Eastern Europe.
Needless to say, but I will anyhow, it's a pleasure to compare views in a respectful forum on a day like this. *hat tip*

I will agree it's nice to see a discussion that is remaining respectful... So far, at least. The rest of the Internet is going up in flames.

Re: More Stuff
Yeah... Better than the way someone handled it on another forum where I've been a member almost ten years now. The first thing he does is get pissed off and use the largest font size for racial slurs against whites, then claims that all the people who voted for him are white supremacists, and how he isn't leaving the country.
It pissed him off even more when I told him he had nothing to worry about, seeing as how he was not only an American citizen, he was born in this country. He responded by saying I had never experienced racism (which I have), and never had to worry that I'd be hurt based on the color of my skin. Funny thing, Little Rock was recently listed as the third most violent city of its size in the country because of gangs. And gang initiations, we are told, frequently involve KILLING WHITE PEOPLE. Oh, and, white people are actually the minority in Little Rock.
But, seeing as how he was a moderator, I had to talk to an admin. Thankfully they sorted it all out in a mature fashion, and nobody got in trouble.
This is the only other forum I can expect the staff to handle things without being dicks about it.

It is, indeed, nice to have a calm, peaceful conversation and friendly debate about this topic. Oh, here's one for ya:
