[Hansontoons]

Finally! After delays, some self-imposed, others not, I managed to finish prototype No. 1 of Hanson's Mark I Two-Piece-stash-in-a-Suitcase Travel Stick. I used oak as it is easy to get, I didn't want to risk my walnut stock if the project wound up in the dustbin.

It went together with a little bit of bendy here, bendy there, and one design change that leaves less than desirable thread engagement between the middle sleeve and the top/bottom pieces. This minor issue can be easily remedied if the fit turns out to be problematic.

Just need to make a strap and off we go! I'll borrow the strap from the walnut stick for a test walk with Jasper tomorrow morning.

I'd need to dig a bit deeper in the "clever bag" to construct one of those. Not that it could not be done, but don't the authorities frown upon such accessories these days? Or is it only if they find out... hmmm....

In California, you can legally carry a sword openly, but not concealed in any way, which rules out carrying a cane with a sword inside. And, cane swords themselves are specifically banned... cannot be manufactured, imported, sold, or even possessed. Violation is a misdemeanor, up to one year in the jug.

So, yeah, around here there is definitely frowning involved. I suspect that even a legitimate "I used it only in self defense" defense wouldn't keep the bearer from some unfortunate consequences.

There's no single US law about them, as far as I know. It's more a local matter. In some places it is illegal to own them, in some places it is legal to own them but illegal to carry them around. There may be some places where it is legal to carry them, though there may be certain legal hoops you have to jump through first. And while one particular state might allow them, a particular city in that state may ban them. So you'd have to research carefully on that. Which is why I generally leave mine at home, and just carry around a big solid stick instead. It's hard to outright ban sticks.

Of course, even in the places where ownership is banned, the police aren't likely to go breaking into your house and searching for one unless you've done something else to get them riled up against you.

The stick is a mite heavier, oak is denser than walnut. The top knob is also larger than normal, the plank I used was a little thicker than the usual stock.

But over-all I am pleased with it. The middle connector is close to the balance point so it rides in hand nicely when carrying horizontal. There is no play at the middle connector, the inside ends of the piece have a slight taper that snug up nicely with a taper on the end of the upper/lower pieces. If I was running a business that made to sell, there'd definitely be some refinement work ahead. For me just bashing around, nah! It'll do.

I'll do some "field testing" in the next couple of weeks. Heading to the Great Northwest, cousins kid getting married in Seattle so a nice family get together will be had.

weather ain't TOO bad, it's a bit overcast with a chance of drizzle the last couple of days, and a bit chillier than I'd like but not too bad overall.

I'll do some "field testing" in the next couple of weeks. Heading to the Great Northwest, cousins kid getting married in Seattle so a nice family get together will be had.

If the long-range forecast from The Weather Channel can be trusted, it's looking to be rather nice thought the next couple weeks.

Packing for the weather you don't want maximizes the chances of effecting the weather you really want, on the principle that you'll haul gear you don't need, no matter how you plan.

Bottle: Franziskaner Weissbier, and yes I will have one now!
Koozie: Goode Co. BBQ, though I favor the taqueria for fajitas and breakfast. The huevos rancheros cure most hangovers and some minor illnesses.

A 17-year-old boy in Mexico has reportedly died after a hickey on his neck led to a stroke.

According to the Daily Mail, Julio Macias Gonzalez was home in Mexico City with his family when he died after having convulsions. Paramedics rushed to the scene but were unable to save the teen.

Media outlets in Mexico are reporting that the teen died from a hickey on his neck, given to him by his 24-year-old girlfriend. Doctors said the bruise caused a blood clot, which then traveled to his brain and resulted in a stroke.

This isn’t the first time a hickey has caused a medical problem. According to the New Zealand Medical Journal, in 2010 a 44-year-old woman suffered a stroke caused by a hickey, but survived.

Doctors say death or strokes from hickeys are possible but very rare.

I haven't posted any pictures here for a while, because i haven't taken many pictures, because i haven't been going anywhere where there might be stuff to photograph. (Got a few family pics - Maggie with Rocket, that sort of stuff) from a while back i might see about, maybe some others - i have to look.)

But today i was out watering some poison ivy that's popped up in the yard - with Roundup - and i observed another volunteer plant on the border between lawn and driveway.

Some of you may have never seen poke salad. Some may have not even heard of it outside the song "Poke Salad Annie"

Anyway, here's what it looks like when it's young; full grown, it may be up to eight feet high, and the berries are a very pretty dark purple. When it's young, the leaves and stem can be eaten if boiled in at least three changes of water - but every part of it is poisonous - particularly the root, which has been known to kill pigs that root it up.
