Meanwhile, there is also a fanfilk video in progress... Sgt. Howard has recorded a filk song, for which he provided the music, the lyrics, and the vocals. I am using video editing software to put together original Wapsi artwork to go along with the song. Once this is all finished, it will be posted on YouTube. It may take a while, though, as I am definitely not working on it full time... but I believe it will be worth the wait.

There is a multitude of contributors regarding fanfic- in truth, most of it is a remarkable group action where we are conversing behind the scenes to make it happen- and there is much that will never see the light of day (one thread bears that title). Sneekythelost, Dinky Inky, Glytchmeister, JWHouk, Just Old Al, TazManiac, Atomic, Free Flyer, Warrl... all have contributed to this effort, all have displayed reams of talent- the conversations of creation are just as entertaining as the rough work that spills forth... and bear in mind, what you have been reading is almost entirely first draft material!
Regarding 'jumping'- there is no set of rules as to how you enjoy this forum other than 'play nice'- if reading it backwards is what you like, go for it. Meanwhile, we are all very pleased and proud to have brought you pleasure with our stories- some silly, some sad, all dedicated to your enjoyment.

So, Wednesday night, my brother and I repaired the trap, blah blah blah.

Last night, my brother's father in law went up there. And killed a hog.

Two of my ham friends just gave me a neat gift. A flowering cherry tree at their house was on its last legs... dying back and leaning. The complex's landscaper was cutting it down, and Scott asked him to cut the bigger parts of the trunk into convenient lengths and set it aside. He painted the ends to slow down the drying and reduce "checking" (splitting) and then called me.

So, now I've got nearly a dozen nice pieces of cherry, stacked in the shade, re-painted with wax, loosely tarped, and starting to dry. Most of them I'll probably let dry for a year and then chainsaw and bandsaw into short boards and spindle-turning stock... good for boxes, knife scales and handles, and so forth. There are some small branch crotches that might have a nice grain pattern.

If I have time next weekend, I think one of the smaller pieces could be made into a nice bowl on the lathe. Scott is curious to know whether this particular cherry will darken in sunlight (as cherry wood often does), and so am I!

It was a pitiful stick of a tree I got for free almost 30 years ago, when the mall I was working at gave them away. Now it's a monster.

HS football player charged after exposing himself in yearbook team photo
 

A dare that landed a spot in a school yearbook is also landing one athlete behind bars.

Police say that Hunter Osborn, 19, a football player at Red Mountain High School in Mesa, Arizona, exposed himself during a team picture.

School officials did not notice the exposure until it was printed in the school yearbook. The picture was also printed in the football program that is sold at games.



Osborn told police that he was 18 when the photo taken and that he was "dared by a football teammate," according to a spokesman for Mesa Police Department.

He admitted to exposing himself in the photo and told detectives that he was "disgusted" for what he had done. That's according to court documents.

Osborn was booked into jail Saturday on 69 counts of indecent exposure, a class 1 misdemeanor, and one count of furnishing harmful items to minors, a class 4 felony. He was subsequently released and ordered to wear an electronic monitor.

In a statement, the district said it was "dismayed" by the student's actions and that it had recalled the yearbook to make a "minor, but critical edit."

Upon learning of the photograph, school administration immediately contacted police and is cooperating fully with the investigation. Disciplinary action will follow policy and may be based on the outcome of the police investigation.

The school and district are conducting an investigation to determine what actions might have prevented the publication of the photograph, so appropriate safeguards can be put in place going forward.

No other details were released.

I'd say #1 and #81 - who obviously stepped aside so it could be seen - need a bit of a talking-to, too.

Also, if nobody noticed until the yearbook and programs had been distributed, it must not be very ... visible.

Oh, I'd love to take you up on that - the walnut one looks gorgeous - but it'll have to wait for a different batch of wood. The pieces of cherry I got are limited to around 24" or so in length - I didn't think to ask for any long pieces (and they'd all been cut by the time I heard about the offer).

I do have a design for a two-piece travel stick, unscrew it and pack in suitcase is the idea. The solid 4ft doesn't pack well and I've been reluctant to try to bring one aboard a commercial aircraft. The two-piece might work with 24" length sections, depends on how tall the user is or how long of a stick is preferred. I am planning to make a two-piecer soon to see how it behaves in the middle attachment area, my concern is that it will be too flexible and be a weak point despite the way I have designed it.

The "lathe" has two through-hole bearings that each hold a shaft. One shaft has a neck that the drill attaches to. Both shafts are tapped with 1/4-20 female thread that holds the mating screw installed top and bottom of stick. The drill turns the stick, I use a belt sander with coarse grit belt to shape the stick. The stick starts with octagonal shape courtesy of table saw and router. Sand sand sand and eventually you have a round stick tapered from top to bottom. Liberally apply finer grades of sandpaper until satisfied, then use Tung oil for a pleasing finish. Easy!
