Working in Iraq, one morning one of my local workers told me the story of a local vegetable seller. It seems the day before had an agent of the bad guys tell him that he couldn't put the cucumbers next to the tomatoes...the cucumbers were a 'male' vegetable and the tomatoes 'female'... o.OSgt. Ok - so Atsali has said she likes boys and girls. I'm sure she likes peas and carrots, too. Why jump on the Everything is Sexual bandwagon over a teen stating a generality?
/EndConfusedGrousing
Actually, in the full context of her statement, she IS talking about sexual preferences- ... "but I don't think Jacob knew that- that doesn't help..."

I also like how Nadette goes from blushing and embarrassed to sort of "Uh. Sali? Hello? Are you in there?"
Re: Penny Drops 2015-04-28
What's with the half-measures? Both of those vegetables should be removed from the market. They are almost certainly the product of an illicit, licentious, and promiscuous pollenation, most likely undertaken before their parent plants were properly married. Ban 'em, I say.Jabberwonky wrote:]Working in Iraq, one morning one of my local workers told me the story of a local vegetable seller. The only exception would be if the seller can provide proper documentation, showing that each individual plant was hand-pollenated by a local member of the clergy.

Oh, it goes back a lot further than that.chaingun427 wrote:Not enough Doctor who fans here to get the title reference I guess...
I first encountered the full phrase "Eventually, the penny dropped and the mechanism emitted a faint creaking sound" in either one of Leslie Charteris' "Saint" stories, or one of "Manning Coles"s "Tommy Hambledon stories - from the 1940s if Hambledon, probably the 30s if the Saint.
And the way it was used, it was already something of a catchphrase.

It's even older. "Nickelodeon" used to have another meaning over a hundred years ago.

Penny may have dropped, but at least she picks herself back up.

well do you mean...chaingun427 wrote:Not enough Doctor who fans here to get the title reference I guess...

or this?? I think "the " is assumed at the start...

and yeah Atsali has a very good brain, she knows a lot... BUT she has no clue about 'sexual signals' - most likely due to being a siren.. But her body 'knows' and reacts!!

The Oxford English Dictionary states that this phrase originated by way of allusion to the mechanism of penny-in-the-slot machines. The OED's earliest citation of a use of the phrase with the 'now I understand' meaning, is from The Daily Mirror August 1939: "And then the penny dropped, and I saw his meaning!"AnotherFairportfan wrote:Oh, it goes back a lot further than that.chaingun427 wrote:Not enough Doctor who fans here to get the title reference I guess...

I hate to nitpick, but its "when first we practice to deceive." Good quote choice!as363 wrote:Being of Scots' background (Mother's side) The following quote from Marmion seems to be appropriate "Oh what a tangled web we weave as we practice to deceive!" Edited one time - stupid fingers

Another appropriate Scots quote:

Re: Penny Drops 2015-04-28
I'm getting the sense that there are three Atsalis (at least):
In fact, I think they may limit themselves to occasionally exchanging cards at Christmas time, if they happen to remember it's that time of year.
- The "nerd" Atsali - she-who-thinks. Bright, bookish, and augmented by the memories of a large number of Lanthians.
- The "emotional" Atsali - a fairly typical (yet atypical) teen entering adolescence.
- The "siren" Atsali - with the body and powers of her race.

Over in Footloose, in a dangerous situation at one point, the three parts of Keti Jones' unique heritage (She's half human and a quarter each werewolf and pixie) manifest as three different complete personalities who all have different ideas as to what they should be doing.Dave wrote:I'm getting the sense that there are three Atsalis (at least):
More to the point, I don't think these three talk very much.

It's possible we're seeing Atsali's "succubus" side - looking at the event from a clinical, dispassionate view, detaching herself from the emotional side.
Nadette better be strong right about now.
