Own what you do and don't let anyone bully you. Also a good idea to keep clean britches in your backpack in case you get the crap scared out of you at the start.

This little fae may find learning from Monica more enjoyable than she ever imagined, until the first time she flubs up and Monica drops the hammer on her with the ‘disappointment speech’:

Monica is not there as a teacher but as a Mentor. So she's not out to TEACH anything. What she is there for is to provide guidance and support and guide Cricket into finding self respect, accepting responsibility, and self control. Fae are extremely fickle and cricket has had that as a role model her entire life. It is very easy to develop arrogance, indifference to others, and lack of responsibility towards others. Surprisingly Cricket has not developed those to the extent Fae usually have. She shows that she does want to be more than a Fae usually is. I suspect her isolation from other Fae is what led to here going this way. Now Monica needs to curb Fae like behavior and encourage the good traits Cricket has. While teachers do that it is supposed to be parents who should do that. Since Cricket's parents didn't Monica now needs to provide the example and set standards for Cricket to see and hopefully adopt. If she does she will be come an very unusual Fae, one who cares.

Atsali needs help with Algebra? Cricket is good in Algebra? Interesting.

I wonder what Monica's mentoring is going to consist of. Calista needs self restraint and a code of ethics, as well as better coping and social skills. Those are kind of hard to teach...

RE the Princess' Brooklyn accent: She may still have it, it's just not showing up visually in her speech balloons. According to Alan, Bud's got enough of an accent that you can identify her as Greek when she speaks; yet you'd never see that from just reading her words.

Part of the Mentoring may include a Grand Tour of Monica's circle. Cricket will see that even though the compoments of a planet-busting chimera, a Comanche/Sphinx Sage of The Forest, the co-Librarians, among other various Mythics of various high positions and power levels all are running out and about in public, nobody's a dick about it all.

This. Cricket is minding her diction. She dropped the bravado speech pattern back in the cafeteria, but still has the Brooklyn accent, just not so thick.

I don't think it's going to be as difficult as all that. Castella is already leaning towards that direction and obviously wants to go that way. Sadly it's something I see all the time. Someone wants to break the negative stereotype of their race and other members of said race aren't too keen on people doing that. The peer pressure can often cause them to give up and follow the negative stereotype.

Take the person away from the influence and mentor them and they often shine.

A friend of mine's family had to pack up and move from Washington DC to Keene New Hampshire to get away from the "inner city" and "gangland" mentality so he could be isolated from the pressure to turn to the "thug life" and could follow his dream of being a marine biologist.

This is what I'm seeing here. Castella is isolated from the Fae culture that was causing her grief when she was living there and M is making sure that the right choices are properly recognized and given a pat on the back.

I likewise would not have had any problems if one of my children were late to something due to helping a fellow student in their studies. I might waggle a finger and remind them that their cell phone has a clock and an alarm but that's about it.

It isn't race, it's culture - including family culture. When our eldest was a teenager she liked to hang out with a lot of street kids. My opinion of them was that the large majority wanted to be responsible but had never been shown what that means or how to do it. We tried to mentor them to the best of our ability, and quite a few of them (but not all) figured things out reasonably well.

(It was tough on our daughter though. She'd try to bitch about her parents to her friends - I think all teenagers do - and their response tended toward "I wish my parents cared that much.")
