Until Paul posts guidelines: My thoughts on the matter.
1. Wapsi doesn't belong to you, it belongs to Paul.
2.Treat the characters with love and respect.
3. The comic is PGish. Artwork should be within this framework.
4. Reasonable gore is okay (miss explody head)edit gratuitous end edit explicit sex is not. The comic is PG people.
5. If you think you did a good job and people and Paul will like it, Post it!
6. If you think it is offensive, it is don't post it.
7. This is Paul's sandbox. He is gratiously letting us play with it a little bit. Don't abuse this privilage.
8. Paul got fed up with the crap in the comments section and got rid of it. He also gave us this forum because he is a nice guy. Don't abuse the nice guy.
9. Paul should enjoy opening the Fan Art section, he shouldn't grit his teeth with what he sees.
Don't be a jerk and spoil it for the rest of us.

I echo your sentiments, Wdot, but mostly it's Paul's sandbox, he is being very nice to let us play with his toys. Leave them as you found them.

Aaaand, I have to ask...what if it's not all that gratuitous? ;)

A Wapsi Square video game would need so many versions that it would make the Final Fantasy franchise look lame.

Yes, of course, but that's the point. Those guidelines get into the eye of the beholder area. What is bad for one may be simply funny for another. The only saving grace I see is that this board is, at least, moderated so objectionable stuff can be removed quickly.

But, even now, people are not leaving them as they found them. That's the point of fan art. They've been colored, had dialog modified, even had the underlying artwork modified.

And what is gratutious? Who defines it? After this past couple of weeks or so, it's taken on additional dimensions and intensity.

Considering Paul himself draws fan art of copyrighted characters, I say it is pretty safe to assume what his personal attitude is. As long as we stay respectful I think we are safe. Let's just be sure to steer clear of insults and Rule 34. I know I wouldn't waste so much time doing this stuff if I wasn't a genuine fan.

Good Job!

But Sugarbear isn't exactly a Wapsi character - she's a character in a TV show Monica watches.

Don't you know the long tradition of crappy and/or missleading box and label art when games are released in the US compared to their original Japanese counterparts? Look up Phalanx for the SNES. The damn publisher must have mixed up the characters. :?

@ shadowinthelight - But is it misleading enough?
@ Bathory's Daughter - Very funny... :D

Here's the thing I was trying to post yesterday. Apparently the export for G.I.M.P. 2.8 has issues. I converted the G.I.M.P. png to a Photoshop png works...

@ Bathory's Daughter - Well done!

@ Jabberwonky - Ya, 2.8 gave me some artifacting when I tried to export to PNG with my Phix post. Went to GIF and it made it a bit choppy, but oh well. Execellent work!

I always export to BMP then convert to PNG with PNGOUT.EXE. It's an extra step but it has always given me the best file size. So I don't have to run it from the command prompt I keep a simple batch file and copy/paste the current filename into it.

PG/PG-13, I don't know what's so hard to understand about that. As long as we follow the ratings system and treat the characters with respect, I think we will be okay. This is a moderated forum, and if any art offends those in charge it will be dealt with and I'm sure warnings will be issued. Bathorys Daughter I laughed at your comic. ShadowintheLight game cartridge art fits nicely with your other post. Jabberwonky, boy that sets a new standard and bar to surmount! Wonderful!!!!

Love the work, but I have a hard time picturing her with that kind of lipstick and nail polish... then again, maybe it's just me... after all, Monica did call her a bimbo, so maybe that's accurate...
