A friend of mine turned me on to Wapsi Square... She linked me to an image of Monica that said: ERMAHGERD!!! BERBS!!! I saw the WapsiSquare url in the bottom corner and went there. When I found out it was an ongoing comic, I went ahead and hit the home button and began reading. After twenty minutes I noticed the dates... 2001!!! I read pretty much every minute I could spare and it took me about two and a half weeks of stolen moments and late nights to get caught up through the most recent strip at the time. Once I reached the end, I wanted more!!!! What is it about this strip that has us jonesing for new strips to the point where we're disappointed at the Friday cliff hangar because we have to wait two whole days to get another?
For me, the characters seem so real. Granted its a cartoon strip, but the issues and feelings and emotions are as real as if they were our real friends. Out of all of the characters, I suppose I'm most like Monica, but I seem to have an affinity for the Ditzy Barrista Tina. She's so utterly confused yet wise and sage in her dealings with others. Just as Monica seems to be able to pull out people's worst fears, Tina is able to get people to face those things they would prefer not to.
Paul has created a comic that has swung with the times, addressed serious personal issues and sucks in everyone who reads it like a black hole.
"In the State of Minnesota, there lurks a strange, mysterious force...
The Black Hole of Wapsi Square..."
I hope everyone has a good Thanks Giving Weekend...
