Dragonaur wrote:Wow! KnightDelight's video is a tough act to follow! Very spiffy! I once saw a similar style animation for Tron using HTML5. I'm afraid of the amount of work it must take to do such a thing. That's a tough act to follow but...
Paul once drew a sketch of Monica in a wetsuit for an ice cream cone fishing pinup. I've been tinkering with the idea since! ^_^;

Wowzers Dragonaur...
First - Woofa!
B - you should be sharing more arts. You seem to be pretty darn good at it.
I hope so see more of your stuff in the future.
(Is anyone else getting a 'squeaky balloon' sound effect in their head?)

EDIT!!! According to spellcheck, the word for which I was groping is "hydrodynamics," not "aquadynamics."
Yes, the hydrodynamics would be off. But I'm not going to be the one to tell her that! ^_^;

Well, one usually gets inspired during dramatic points in the story. I was well pleased to see Kathrine staying involved in Atsali and Castela's well being. Tho' I ended up drawing Monic again. ^_^; Jin is a favorite too. It was great to see she turned out alright back in her story arc.

You have some serious talent there, never let anyone tell you differently.
This message is brought to you by the "Let the artist know how much you LOVE his work" council.

Everyone knows that the big ones live deep...
I have been studying your arts, purely for research purposes I assure you, and I get an animation cell vibe from them. It's a great look and a great technique. Thank you for sharing your work with us.

Agreed. The slight shadow around the main drawing over the softly "painted" background is quite effective. Dragonaur, your animation simulation is cause for jubilation.

I'm done thinking for today! It's caused me enough trouble!

Well, if you've been at my deviantart site I can possibly understand... I've got loads of "cel shaded" comics there! I'm a big fan of the old 80's OVA's "original video anime." I love that look. But regardless of that, I do find it easiest to use a solid ink line so that flood filling and general manipulation of regions becomes a snap. For that last image I used a big fuzzy brush for the shadows and highlights within the body (so not cel shaded by definition). Outside is a simple Photoshop drop shadow which I thought was a easy way to "punch up" the color a bit.
Like most kids I always wanted to do animation but to this day I only have about 5 minutes of animation on super 8 film to my name. ^_^; One of these days, I'll have to try something on the computer!
Here's an explorer Monica I drew when Paul mentioned Atlantis once in the strip not too long ago. I should have drawn Dietzel back there. I didn't use the drop shadow here because I felt her her dark presence with the light background was enough.

I was hoping someone would do that someday. Well, a while back I decided to give it a try and the results are now on Vimeo here: The volume is a low, so you may have to crank up it's audio setting, as well as your computer's. Best watch it while you can. Paul may consider this a bit too much for "fan art" and I'll have to take it down.

EPIC!!!
Well put!
I watched the HD version again this weekend, with a good pair of headphones on (Sennnheiser HD 580s) and was carried away once again... wonderful work! KD, you did something really neat for us rabid fans! Thank you!
Heh. All this talk about shading & colouring sails over my head like an excitable Siren. As the old saying goes: I don't know much about art, but I know what I like. Speaking of:

Firstly, the obligatory SHAZOWIE!! Secondly, the lines inside of Mon's mask kind of make her look like she's smiling. For a second, I was wondering what had made her so happy.

She found the elusive four scoop Ice Cream Fish.

Yanno how some people have Angels/Devils for a conscience? I have a Dark Elf ShadowKnight and a Half Elf Ranger for mine. The really bad part is when they agree on something.

Yup, that's the ticket. I had seen your excellent tutorial before, but was in a hurry and didn't bother to look up the technique again... and so of course the job took longer, the hard way, than it would have taken to do it the better way.

Thank you. That's very good of you to say.
And, you're welcome, Dave. It was made by a rabid fan for rabid fans.
Dragonaur, that is very nice and professional looking work. It should be just a matter of time before you are making a full time living from your drawing expertise.
DANGEROUSLY UNDER-MEDICATED If we are what we eat, then I'm easy, fast, and cheap

ROTFLOL! I don't think I've made more than $50 out of a lifetime of cartooning efforts! I doubt I'm going to find that magic mixture of story and art that precipitates "full time living" kind of money. I'm simply a rabid cartooning fan. Your animation makes me want to try animating too! ^_^
Dave wrote:I definitely need to play around more with the multiple-layers method of adding color. Fuzzy-select of white zones doesn't really cut it.
Try this. Using Grow Selection by 2px under the Ink layer works wonders.
For all the stuff I've done, I've scaled it up to 200% before starting work. Scale back down when done. Easy peasy!
Dave, in Photoshop the way I do it, is to put the b/w line work on a MULTIPLY layer. Use a separate color layer below that. Use the magic wand with something like a high tolerance like 120. Select the regions and fill all the colors. And when I'm done, I stick an all black layer at the bottom to deal with the that bit of color/ink crossover (depending on how one merges with a background).
That's just one way to do it. I think there's a different way for every artist on the web!
It's tough working with low res (somewhere around 72 dpi) b/w works from web pages. That's where Atomic's scaling up helps, so you're working with more "pixels".
