One thing that bothers me about that site is the non-permanency of images:

How long will my uploaded files be available?

Your files will only be deleted if they do not adhere to our Terms of Service. If you are registered, your files will be available forever. If you are not registered, any file that you upload will continue to be available if it is accessed by anyone at least onc per year.

So unless you subscribe to a premium plan (starts at $2/month), you have to make sure to look at all your images at least once a year, or they will be deleted!

I think that is somewhat of a false advertising deal:

It costs nothing to register. Unless you have huge files, it's not an issue - and they're there indefinitely.

That's just it: they are NOT there indefinitely!

Unless someone, anyone, looks at an image at least once during the span of a year, that image will be deleted, unless you happen to have a paid subscription. That's what bugs me about their service.

I could understand having file size restrictions for free accounts, but not having to have someone view the image to make sure it stays there.

I have, for years now, learned that when you see the word 'free', look for hidden cost. The Image Shack free account is worth it, how hard is it to take a peek once a year? I haven't felt the need, size-wise or other wise to move up to the subscription level. Same with Photobucket, for my needs free is enough.

Yeah, the Frog has its problems but at least they don't resize your pictures like the Bucket.

AFAIK, dA only resizes a large image for preview; one can click on the preview (or "Download" the pic) to see it full-sized.

I have, for years now, learned that when you see the word 'free', look for hidden cost.

You just have to compare the hidden costs, to determine which "free" lunch is the most satisfying...

It all depends on how many images you upload... If we're talking about images you create, then there is a limit to how much you create in how much time, so it can be manageable. On the other hand, if you start uploading all your digital camera photos, that can be a lot of photos to have to look at in one year, just to be sure they stay there...

For instance, when I go on vacation, I tend to stick my arm out the window as I drive, and snap photos of the scenery along the way. I can easily take upwards to 2000 photos in the span of 2 weeks. If I wanted to upload them to ImageShack, as a form of backup for my photos, I would have to spend quite a bit of time, after a while, just looking again at my photos just to keep them there. Of course, photos are typically taken so you can look at them again later, but as your number of photos increases, that can become somewhat tedious...

I haven't felt the need, size-wise or other wise to move up to the subscription level. Same with Photobucket, for my needs free is enough.

For sharing a photo, here and there, on different forums, free Photobucket has been sufficient, for now. But I still have not decided which service to use, as a backup for my digital camera photos. With 23,868 photos, 595 folders, 57.4 GB, I'm guessing a free account won't be enough...

Terabyte external hard drives are way cheap and work nicely. I have a 1TB Western Digital I use for major backups regularly. It's enough for several incremental layers as well. Some 16-32 Gig flash cards are nice to have around too.

I already have a 3TBG external USB 3.0 drive, for backup purposes... but it's still in the same physical location... one good fire and it's just as gone as the computer... That's why it would still be nice to have some form of cloud backup for these images...
