It's only a thousand years out, I've made worse errors on simpler sums!

Hmmm - 5K years ago == 4K BC, well prior to many known periods of Northern and Mesoamerican cultures, though the start dates of Aztec, Mayan, and Incan periods had something as a precursor somewhere. Pueblo (Anasazi?) or Mississippian perhaps? Plus the major tribal families, such as Sioux, Comanche, Hopi, and Navaho (to focus on the western plains and Southwest in general, and Nahuatl, Zapotec, Yaqui, and such from Mexico.

So, at the very least, Lilly's ancestry is very Post-Clovis Native American.

The Chimera creators (pre-Lanthian?) reached their peak about 12.5K ago (see Bud) but rapidly died out when Bud cleaned their clock - straight to the bone. What was left (outside the blast radius) recovered and resumed their social progression. Note that the Anasazi are thought to have emerged about 12K ago. (Some one's been doing their plot outlines!)

I wonder -- That Lilly's been stuck as a vampire for a long, long, time, what did she do starting way back when? How/who did she serve? Ronin warrior? Chieftan's enforcer? Shaman? Healer/midwife? There would be a tale -- the woman who couldn't die....

Lilly needs a hug.
If Lilly's hair is any indication, she's from the Mediterranean area, not North America, which is entirely plausible considering the stargates.
That being the case, everything around her would be alien, including the know-how of finding food and water.
She would be effectively banished in any event, which was something just short of a death sentence in the Archaic Mediterranean.
So even if she learned how to survive she would still die alone, perhaps not knowing that the natives might actually welcome her.

The fact that Suzi had no clue about the circumstances of Lily's death, even after half a century of acquaintance (and partnership?) suggests that maybe it isn't easy for vampires to have trusting relationships. There might be a monograph for somebody here... "A study of the intratribal bonding practices and rituals of shitty mosquitoes".

Remember that just by the fact that Lily is also a vampire, Suzi knows that something Really Awful happened to her. I can see this being the sort of thing vampires don't like to talk about in the Wapsiverse. Certainly it's not something to ask about if your friend doesn't want to volunteer it. Suzi might not have talked about the details of her death either.

It surprised me, too; I'd figured Lilly's ancestry to be African, not Native American. Granted, in the last few hundred years that doesn't mean much - but if she's five thousand years old I'd expect her to look more Asian or classically Native American.

As mentioned elsewhere, this is reminiscent of the tale of the Chimera...

...Which suggests to me that I'm right on track with my observation: Brandi may have been involved in what got Lily "killed".

Check out the story of Wandering Eye - which begins here and concludes here... (and imagine reading that at a rate of only three pages a week...)

I'll bet they can simulate levitation with a little slight of hand and vampire strength though- ala Silver Lyon in the the Chronicles of the Dragon by Samantha K (see storiesonline.com). 8-)

Make sure it's not storiesonline.net, though.

I do mean storiesonline.net! However, not all of the stories are erotic or pornographic and not all of them are badly written. Samantha K's stories are very well written- for pornography. This is the tale of a young girl who gains superpowers and ends up fighting criminals, terrorists and super villains. She will also pretty much screw anything. Silver Lyon is a vampire that the Dragon befriends and talks into joining her Guardians group when they take on nuclear terrorists for No Such Agency. These are NOT stories for anyone but adults who like reading strong erotica. So yeah- WARNING, definitely. If you want to read about Silver Lyon, read the last two installments- 7 and 8- of the Dragon Chronicles.

Fairportfan, I love David's books to pieces, even as they seem to grow larger and larger, but I do like an occasional well-written piece of erotic SF.

YMMV, of course. 8-)

My feeling here, and it is just my opinion, is that Lily and Suzi are somewhat exceptional vampires, in that they are both trying to do good the best they know how. Human nature being what it is, how many vampires would rise and feel anything but rage and resentment at a world that had cast them aside and forgotten them? Some time in the past, both women made a concious decision to try and make a difference and make the world a better place, and in the process met each other. That dosen't mean they don't have serious issues, or that they don't occasionally "fall off the wagon". But they aren't Phix's "shitty little mosquitos".

I have a feeling Lily is going to get her closure.

And The Jaguar Girl will be involved somehow.

A 5000 year old vampire who was abandoned to die in a gods forsaken wasteland could use a busty mom hug.

Mark my words.

There will be tears.
