Hmmm. I wonder if Mindy has tried either M-S (mid-side), or soundfield (Ambisonic) microphones, in place of the usual stereo pair she seemed to be using.

It looks like she close-miced a sudden conflagration to get an explosion that wasn't an explosion, a recording that had explosion characteristics but not produced by an actual explosion.

I sorta think she's doing a sound-effect version of an asteroid impact... a loud flaming whoosh followed by an Earth-shattering kaboom.
