That style used to be affectionately referred to as "Shelly Vision," as it was usually featured when she was retelling a story.

I started looking for one, but can't find it yet (the archive is rather large, for this comic...) I'm thinking of the one where Shelly recalls what happened at the bar, when someone dissed "Native Americans", and Shelly whoooped his butt. The scene ended with Bud doing air guitar...

Given the title of this particular strip, you can see why we ended up calling it "Shelly Vision"...

Shellyvision - Paul does panels like that from time to time; there were two in the sequence where Shelly and Monica got royally reamed by Phix - one showing the start of their race through the streets; and one of kindergarten-age Castela hero-worshiping them, which was right after she interrupted Phix yelling at them

Note that the two on the left end are Roxanne's parents - who had not yet eloped/been put on a bus at that point in the comic:

To be pedantically correct about it, Katherine is several thousand years older than Monica is. 6300-and-some years older.
