Drawing Stuff

Post by Atomic »

Just came across this interesting blog: Escher Girls

The focus is taking the piss out of silly cartoon art, especially the T&A style of female hero types by redrawing them without the broken backs, uber-boobs, and insane postures. For example this Before and After.

Image

Slightly NSFW-ish because some source images are really silly. Enjoy!

Well, the one you posted here at least shows that the realistic girl is better looking (IMO). :)

I appreciate the link. Unfortunately, the busted anatomy for female characters in comics probably isn't going anywhere. The creators know the main demographic they're selling to, and borderline soft core porn sells books. What bugs me is how they justify it.

"Captain Double D dresses in outfits that would embarras a prostitute because she's a strong confident woman. She's secure in her sexuallity, so she sleeps with anything that moves. Especially other chicks. Cause that's hot. And she has ginourmus gravity defying hooters because, well, boobs."

I mean, Superman, the Man of Steel, wears armor in the new continuity while Wonder Woman, an Amazon warrior, has to get by with a corset and hot pants. And gogo boots. Seriously, the girl needs to be in some kind of armor. To see how it should be done, look at the Avengers movie. True, Maria Hill and Black Widow wore skin tight bodysuits, but so did Captain America and Hawkeye. Thor spent most of the movie displaying his arms in the gunshow, and while your mileage may vary where the Hulk is concerned, Big Green spent all of his screen time shirtless. The only Nude scene was Doctor Banner post Hulk out. The female characters were treated with the same respect as the male characters, at least in the movie. Hell, they showed less skin than the guys. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a bit of cheesecake in the occasional pinup, but some of the examples on the site you linked to remind me why I've mostly given up on mainstream comics.

They can still do their "borderline soft core porn" while using a more realistic anatomical structure. I tend to agree that it is impossible to hope that the females in mainsteam comics (or video games for that matter) will ever be depicted in realistic clothing/armor. However, I think that it would be worthwhile for them to attempt drawing anatomically feasible women. Like I said...the "fixed" girl Atomic posted is actually just as, if not more, attractive than the one with the ridiculously impossible waist...and the other chick in the background...still busty and curvy, but without the "so corseted that her ribs wrap around her insides twice" look.

I see your point. I blame the '90s in general and Rob Liefield in particular. Before that, comic artists had to have a grasp of basic human anatomy. I'm okay with stylized art, after all Wapsi Square is stylized, but comics like the one you posted are going for a more "realistic" look, except they're getting anatomy all wrong. My high school art teacher used to say, "Before you break the rules, you have to know what the rules are." This was in response to my complaint that Piccaso wasn't realistic. She showed me pictures of works he had done that were very realistic. Her point was, he knew what the rules were, and how he was breaking them. I honestly think folks like the "Danger Girl" artist and 'ol Rob don't know what the rules are.

If ever there is somewhere in the universe the Planet of Busty Butt-sprung Women in Corsets, and I'm forced to visit, I think I'll set up shop as a Chiropractor.

The comic artists can fend for themselves.

The new Tomb Raider Origins looks promising. She is proportionally proper without the bowling balls in her shirt that they had previously, and realistic gravity and movements.

BTW, apologies in advance for all the recent typos I may have had. I am still breaking in this Kindle Fire HD.

I quit reading when large and in charge got a twig misplaced over the butt size and shapes.
Yanno how some people have Angels/Devils for a conscience? I have a Dark Elf ShadowKnight and a Half Elf Ranger for mine. The really bad part is when they agree on something.

Aphyon chu kissa whol l'jaed.
