Tales of severed heads? Family curses which condemn every eldest child to a horrible death? Revenants which stagger from church graveyard to the homes of innocent children, hungering for living flesh? The whispering ghostly voices of murdered IRS tax auditors, troubling consciences in the wee hours of the night?

Nah. It's attention to the simple elements which make for a great story.

I would argue the wisdom of scaring the crap out of a walking weapon of mass destruction. That just does not seem conducive to death by old age. Got to admit though Digit is a master of fireside ghost stories.
