Remember the pinups of her at 17 and 21...

She's been through a few rounds of "get intense, get angry or upset, don't talk about it, just rage quietly" in her young life. She could be growing tired of the limits of that strategy.

As you say... age and maturity kicking in.

It may also be that she is developing another best friend or perhaps this is the precursor to a romantic exploration.

Shawna may officially become a member of the Scoobies yet.

It's possible that Future Castela isn't so much a 'Hot Mess' as acting in Defense of someone else...
