Introspection... indigestion... they can both cause an awful pain in the insides...

Shawna! Castela needs you! Make her feel better with the power of hugs!

Good thing she decided it's no longer a competition...

I think Shawna has discovered Hiroshi is about as romantic as a slug. And that any possible romantic feelings he might have are mostly directed at the girl who protected him in the canyon.

Shawna isn't exactly a disinterested party, is she?

Considering that slugs are hermaphroditic... hmmm, I'm not sure just how one would even begin to evaluate "romantic" in that context. The closest sapient analog I can think of is the people of Gethen, from "The Left Hand of Darkness"... they certainly did have both love and romance, but the latter worked a bit differently than along more polarized species.
It's true, though, that Shawna might have learned the truth that Spock said to Stonn... that having is often less satisfying than wanting.

Gender fluid people. The bits don’t do it but the mind does.

I assume this is part of Shawna's "Who am I and what do I want" self examination, as well...

I wonder how that relationship worked out. Maybe they wound up as deliriously happy with each other as Vulcans can be.
Probably not.

And the prize is a tin of caviar. Sturgeon caviar, of course... the finest!

Probably not.
That relationship got a significant mention in Diane Duane's excellent 1988 Trek novel
Spock's World, which is (mostly) set some years after the events in
Amok Time.
It did not end well. Sociopaths don't make the best partners.

I have that book (or used to, I don't know... I think it's still in one of the moving boxes...)
Didn't it turn out that she stood to make a lot of money, should Vulcan withdraw from the Federation, and she would get to hurt Spock, as well? It's been so long, since I read it...
I like Diane Duane's books. I have a number of the non-Star Trek ones. However, I read all the James Blish ST books as well.
