My review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

About halfway through the film, i suddenly realised that the whole film is built around these two hotshot agents who leave a trail of destruction behind them when fighting Evil looking for and then protecting a cute little critter that everybody in the galaxy seems to want.

So... is this one of those 'it's better to be inebriated, prior to'... type films?

Isn't that every movie, though?

(But then, inebriation doesn't help some movies...)

Winslow -- is that a relative of the Schmoo?

Not sure, but there might be a flatbed Ford involved.

Wrong Winslow. Go stand on the corner with Glenn.

Depends - what's your take on The Fifth Element?

This is TFE bigger, brighter, noisier and bigger.

This is the most positive review of it I've read. Howard Tayler and the New Yorker both said, basically, that it's unwatchable.

Tayler said he was physically cringing in his seat, and people were leaving the theater.

The Rotten Tomatoes critical aggregate is 54% positive; viewers are 60%.

I remember those sort of reviews for Fifth Element at the time, too.

I don't get to the movies as much as I should. But overall, when reviews are pointedly mixed, I've found that's a good sign.

I remember bad reviews for Alien and Apocalypse Now.

If you survived seeing Star Crash starring Marjoe Gortner, well...

Now thats not fair. Maybe a better example might be Star Man, w/ Jeff Bridges...

Wait, lets call an actual thing to compare this new film to might be the almost unwatchable 'Jupiter Ascending'...

At least it isn't Battlefield Earth...

I saw a preview for it, and something about it put me off a bit. Maybe it was that most of the visuals just looked too busy to me. I wasn't planning on watching it at the cinema, but would probably check it out when it shows up at the local library (from which I just earlier today checked out the previously mentioned Jupiter Ascending; I'll find out how horrible that is later on, I suppose).

That'll be the sequel, when they have a cross-over and wacky hijinks ensue.

Yeah, I should also clarify:

I haven't seen Battlefield Earth, just a YouTube video talking about the Psychlos being too stupid to actually exist (not to mention the fact that their atmosphere reacts EXPLOSIVELY to even the tiniest amount of radioactive matter... How did solar wind not solve the problem before it started?), and I also haven't seen most of the movies mentioned in this thread.

Though I have seen The Fifth Element. Good movie.

You're going to likely find one or two things to like about it, to be sure, but for the most part you are going to rely heavily on your powers of Disbelief Suspension...

I used to avidly read the (French) comic books this movie is based on. I do hope to watch the movie. My recollection of the comic books is rather vague, though... Although I did find a channel on YouTube that had (French) episodes of a series based on the books, which jogged my memory a bit.

I have watched the trailers, and I'm pretty sure that whenever I see it (whether in theaters, or on Netflix), I will most likely enjoy it.
