Uh, yeah. Who has issues in this family, now?

(EDIT: Link wasn't there when I posted.)

Note the link in my post.

================

Remember – back in the Orphanage sequence, before the adoption, when she began throwing a tantrum, she was saying her parents “threw her away”.

Her abandonment issues are a lot worse than Atsali's.

Two girls with abandonment issues turned up to 11.

Kath would be quivering in her boots if she knew the depth of her daughters' issues...

Good sir,I do believe that you have greatly underestimated our dear Kath...

Do you think Kath and/or Bryn could have overheard Atsali's and Castela's exchange?

After Kath's "With Me. Now" admonishment, I suspect Cassie held her tongue until Kath and Bryn were out of the house.

Pickel, it seems like you're projecting a bit of yourself into what you think your mom's relationship happens to be.

It's a big converted Warehouse, they could just be on a different floor...

True, but I would expect our shaken couple to try to get the date back on track.

Well, so much for the wiser-than-her-years or paranormal senses . . . /rueful shrug/

This isn't just issues . . . this is a long-standing subscription!

Pickle, dear, you really do need to listen . . . especially to yourself!

And if they knew of hers?

I'd expect that Katherine and Bryn were partaking of the canoodling on the ground floor, the general family area of the building. Judging by the big "4" on the wall, Atsali and Castela are squabbling on the fourth floor. Unless the adults are lurking somewhere in the stairwell, I doubt that Katherine could hear them. It's hard to say if Bryn could, since we don't know anything about her kind's hearing abilities.

Regardless of what happens Kath will never be the same. Life is a never-ending series of changes, some good, some not-so-good.

How we react to those changes is how they will affect others.

Remember the generation end . . . Atsali is a siren, and I get the impression that Castela is being just as loud.

They may be able to hear the girls downtown.

To quote from another webcomic: "Mom, canids on Maui can hear when you do that. . . possibly Mars . . ."

BTW, the daughter's an aerospace engineer named Jenny Curtis . . .

And that, too, is love, Castela; caring for people enough to let them go out and perhaps get hurt, and bring the hurt home. Kath has not tried to seal YOU up in a jar and keep you the same, she's letting you go out, experience life, and get hurt by it because that's how people grow. You need to be willing to do the same and not be selfish.

What makes you think she doesn't? BOTH daughters. She lives with them, she's shown she understands each of them very well; she may not know everything, but issues like this are a bit hard to miss.

Where she's gone, oh I'll never know for sure
but it's my hope that she's found that open door.
And as she left, she said
"Love is to explore,
taking chances,
taking chances."
(David Riordan, "Empty Windows")

Fear of abandonment,
fear of change,
fear that the one person she looks to as "safe and sure" is actually just as fallible and vulnerable and mortal as anyone else,
fear of losing Kath's love and support and attention to someone else...
realizing that no matter how things go with Bryn, Kath won't ever be the same...

it's quite a pickle.

For someone as unique as Castela, it must be hard to figure out a place and path in the world. Having one true and dependable anchor must count for a lot... and suddenly realizing that your anchor may have other priorities in life, and may be coming adrift from the bottom, must be as scary as hell.

And the real hell of it... that's just part of becoming an adult.

What a cruel little weed she can be.

Having no respect for her mother, the things she's said the past couple of pages! And on top of that, what has her principle done to earn such ire?

I think... she's dreadfully scared. Rightly or wrongly, she sees Kath turning away from her, and fears that this means the loss of the only secure home and relationships she's ever known. She fears that she's about to be abandoned again (at least emotionally). And, like so many of us, she tends to strike out at what triggered that fear, rather than confronting the underlying cause within herself.

To quote Spider Robinson, "Anger is always fear in disguise."

Castela seems to be naturally protective . . . it seems that when the protective instincts intersect with her fears, things get exponentially worse.
