I'd assume they expand on the ends when she's focusing in real-close like; that and/or they are taking in more data (like irises dilating...

If this is a scene out in the rock jumbles, near where she burned a pithy phase into a cliff... it's possible that the butterfly was already there when she arrived. No telling how thoroughly a "bioshield" sweeps the interior when it's first set up; it might just a barrier around the outside.

Sounds like the bio-shield is there all the time, if only to keep people from stumbling into this area and seeing what various paras have been doing to a national monument.

And i swear it looks as if the flutterby is WATCHING her interestedly in Panel Two...

Brave butterfly. I wonder if it's a male?

I was wondering if Pickle's eye buds are what she morphs to present normal eyes and if they are slowly assuming a normal eye shape.
Then again, it would make sense if she expanded the surface and/or flattened the "retina" to focus on small nearby objects.

(pretty soon were going to need to produce a 'How Stuff in the Wapsiverse Works' type bible, like the book they cobbled together for Star Trek...)
