I think it may take the best efforts of a golem and a vampire, working together, to keep those two semi-unsupervised youngsters out of the worst of the trouble they will probably try to get into while Mom's away. Just think what sort of unauthorized house party they might try to summon!

Ok to much shock for system. First mama Kat in a bikini. Then two teenagers left unsupervised. Thoughts of a trip out of town having left a 15 and 16 year old alone with grandparents to check up on them. Yea like that ended well. Then AnotherFairportfan uses that image and suddenly my mind goes off in search of Elsa and frozen porn thoughts. Deep breaths mickey and think calming thoughts. ommm, ommmm.

My first thought was that Mama Kat wasn't going Hunting per se, but that she got a last minuet Invitation to Go Somewhere & Do Something, or Nothing At All, it's up to you...

Kat's sure come a long way from her spider-collecting creepy girl days. Honestly, though, I didn't really understand the transition. She went from 'socially awkward doesn't BEGIN to describe it', whose bright point was 'having a good butt day' to 'ex air force badass' in like five strips at the beginning of the chapter where she first met Atsali.

My opinion is that being in Real Action where her skills were needed (setting her own broken nose, reducing Atsaili's dislocated shoulder, etc.) gave her enough of an adrenaline jolt that she shook off the PTSD from the Dead Sea incident (which would have been grad school, after her Air Force days).

I think she had been "on the mend", a bit at a time, quite some time before that. She'd been trying to shake off her social phobias, with some success.

Then, the day she set out in what turned out to be the Mapimi adventure, she emotionally committed herself to mattering. She was going to have an impact in the world.

And then, the world (in the form of Atsali's foot) had an impact on her... and rather than just take it, she took back her own power.

...and, of course, there isn't anyone in the comic from those days who hasn't changed to a greater or lesser extent; Tina comes to mind.

Atsali looks stunned, while Castela looks more as though she's marveling at the situation. Perhaps because Atsali is the one who will be expected to be responsible, while Castela gets to run wild. . .

I wonder how long they'll be left with minimal supervision?

She didn't have to become a new person, she just had to remember how to be who she was before things went wrong. She'd already voluntarily been making strides in that direction, and then becoming responsible for one (and then two) kids made it a necessity that really gave her a shove in the right direction.
