It's not easy, telling someone something you know will grieve them, yet being able to do so in a way that conveys that even though it hurts to hear this, you care about them and you are there for them.
Nicely done.
And the explanation itself denotes a fair amount of wisdom on the mom's part. Nicely explained.

At least there's a way to
exit the friend zone. Of course, the befriending someone while having hidden motives for doing so is a crappy thing to do.
