Linky
Considering the furor and controversy surrounding genders and bathrooms these days, today's comic is . . . an interesting choice.
If the events in today's comic had happened in about half of the other webcomics that I read, the forums would erupt into one kind of frenzy or another.
----
And without
clicking this link, can anyone make a guess what the
first strip to called "Messed Up" was? (I really doubt it, as it happened long enough ago, that the character models had changed enough I was wondering "Who are these people?")

Well, apparently, the RSS feed didn't... Feed.
And, Nady showed great restraint, by keeping eye contact in that last panel.

I had to click the link, because I never remember the titles of old comics, and there's no way I'd have remembered that one.
Also, Nadette grabbed Atsali's boobs, and yet neither one of them looks happy.
Is this the first time we've seen it? Boob grabbing between these two, I mean. (I'm sure it's happened before, in private, though.)
Heh, that reminds me of an old comic were Jin surprised Monica with a double grope from behind. Monica thought she was someone else at first.

Nadette isn't looking unhappy - she's like "Duh, sweetie"

It just hit me that Nadette is groping Atsali (at least, that's what it looks like) right in the middle of the mall.

It's not like most hetero males will object . . . or homo females . . . or . . .
And Atsali is raising cluelessness well beyond an art form.

I can picture, maybe three times that Natte' has had a handful, but some of those might be eBay Only renditions...
otoh, I'd completely missed they were set in a space that's likely just coming out of the hairdressers'/barbershop- In The Mall.
Oops.
Atsali, she's so anxiety ridden with self-conscious body-image issues. <sigh>, poor baby.
(Sometimes when you try and pay positive attention, it come across as too much attention; "
What?, are you some kind of 'fetishist'?!?, Why do you keep say all these nice things to me!?!"...)
Oi. can you win?

She might be yelled at for a lot of things but being a boy wont ever be one.

I'm reserving judgement on Atsali's hair till we see it from a different angle. Doesn't look the best from the side.

It's not so much cluelessness, as unnecessary anxiety. I.e. "What of something that could not possibly happen, happened?" Not unusual, really. People will spend thousands to prepare for events that are less likely than a shark attack in Utah, yet will do nothing to prepare for the forecasted weather, because it's "only 80%".

I have seven sisters. You know how many times I've been through this particular game when they decided they wanted to do something "different" with their hair? This is actually pretty common. For many, hair = comfort blanket. Heck, that's pretty much why the comb over exists right?

From Schubert's Last Serenade:
The Waiter approaches. "Sir, I must ask you to remove your hat in the restaurant."
Arthur: "I'm not taking off my hat."
The Waiter: "Why won't he remove his hat?"
Bibi: "Because it's not a hat. It's a symbol. If he takes it off, he'll have an identity crisis."
Same thing, sort of. Hair isn't just a comfort blanket, it's part of our Self as presented to the world. Cut it off, and we don't quite know who we are any more.
Why do you think that military inductees are always shorn, as soon as they arrive at boot camp? It takes away part of their individually.

George Herriman, creator of
Krazy Kat, never allowed himself to be photographed without his hat.
(Incidentally, if you're familiar with New Orleans patois, Yat or Nint' Wahd, try reading
Krazy Kat in that accent... Herriman was born in NOLa.)

I think the hamster gave up, jumped off of the wheel, and is now lazily pawing at it.
Either that or the hamster is running on top of the wrong cog.

I'd say "looks like" is correct here. It seems to me as if this isn't a "grope" in the usual sense: it wasn't being done for the sexual pleasure of either the groper or the gropee. It was very much a matter-of-fact "hey, remember you have these?" reply to Atsali's wig-out.
Nadette running her fingers through Atsali's short hair and across her scalp... now
that was a grope! It just didn't happen to involve the
traditional erogenous zones. Amazing, what the kids these days will do in public!

Some speculate that he insisted on the hat because his hair was somewhat, shall we say, nappy, and the times being what they were . . . .
[Being a hardcore hat fan myself, I'm not altogether sold on this theory, but it's interesting.]
Krazy Kat was just tremendous. I saw the cartoon shorts on TV as a kid, but they are pale suggestions of Herriman's actual work. Did even Schulz and Watterson even come close?

The solution is obvious, Atsali: just wear diapers from now on whenever you'll be out in public. That way you don't need to worry about using any public facilities.

She could always
ask Cassie about ANED underwear...
