You know the problem with trying to cross-breed modern hybrids - they don't "breed true", and tend to back-cross in all sorts of interesting and unpredictable ways. The offspring may revert to being like one or the other of the ancestral strains, or have an odd mix of characteristics that you wouldn't expect.

You might end up with a heavy-duty shoulder stock and a sniper-grade rear sight, attached to a pepperbox pistol's multiple barrels. It'd look rather silly.

Yes, that's old enough that they would pre-date the development of F1 hybridization. They're certainly "traditional", I imagine they're "heirloom". Dunno about "open pollenated" but the odds seem good... all that black-powder smoke tended to drift around the battlefield and didn't care whose cylinders it got into. So, there's a decent chance they'll breed true if they're still fertile (which is a potential area of concern given their age).

Hard to tell for sure. Chromosome analysis of firearms is a field of science that in its infancy.

I guess all you can do is hope for the best. Put them in warm, comfortable surroundings, turn on some soft music, open a bottle of champagne (or a magnum of Hoppes #9 if that's more to their tastes), leave them in privacy, and listen for the sound of little derringers scampering around after a while.

Original Walkers were smoothbore- no rifling. The repops are all right hand rifling. ... they do ignore each other... and I caught one of them eyeing the cat... hmmm...
