not my work by any means but it'd be cool to see a mashup, Wapsi-style...

Not a mash-up, but cool never the less...

Yeah, pretty cool.
What i thought of later was that both Miyazaki and Paul have a strong female protagonist leaning...
Seemed a natural, (who in the Wapsiverse would play Princess Mononoke?)

Re: Derivation Inspiration
I've got to watch that sometime. Everyone keeps talking about it. But I'm kinda hesitant because I'm more of a fan of stuff like Black Lagoon, Hellsing Ultimate, Bleach, Soul Eater, Sword Art Online, Blue Exorcist, Code Geass (I'm still just dipping my toes in that one, not even sure how to spell it yet)...
(In descending order of enjoyment, with Black Lagoon and Hellsing Ultimate tied at first place)
What's all that called? Shonen? Anyway, Miazaki stuff always seems to be advertised like they're happy, cute little fairy tales with really good art and animation.

Cute? Often. Happy? Definitely not always.GlytchMeister wrote:Anyway, Miazaki stuff always seems to be advertised like they're happy, cute little fairy tales with really good art and animation.

Did Miazaki do anything similar to Hellsing Ultimate or Black Lagoon? It doesn't even have to be all that grimdark, I just want some good action.
(Yes, I also enjoyed The Expendables, how did you guess? But I'm not a total slave to mindless violence. I like intelligent violence too. )

Re: Derivation Inspiration
I haven't seen how much action those have so I can't say for sure but Miyazaki is probably calmer by comparison. Where some of his films have no problem going is plenty of drama.

Re: Derivation Inspiration
Castle in the Sky has a fair amount of action... (Chases, airship battles, things blowing up good...)
========
Howl's Moving Castle should be avoided until after reading the Diana Wynne Jones book (in order to understand where Miyazaki went terribly wrong) - if then.

Re: Derivation Inspiration
Black Lagoon is basically crime, the gradual erosion of a new guy's innocence, hot chicks, and guns. Lots and lots of guns. And blood. On par with 300.shadowinthelight wrote:I haven't seen how much action those have so I can't say for sure but Miyazaki is probably calmer by comparison. Hellsing is vampires, the gradual erosion of a vampire fledgling's innocence, who also happens to be a hot chick (but much less fanservice), guns, armies, nazis, more guns, blood, guns, and blood. Sooo much blood. Rivers of it. 300^3.

Re: Derivation Inspiration
Give Princess Mononoke a run. Lotsa violence, demonic infection, decapitation by arrow, armies, armies of giant pissed off boars, the theft of a god's head and blood 'o plenty...
It's one of my favorite movies.

I'll admit I haven't read much about Princess Mononoke, but what I did read certainly didn't include any of THAT.Jabberwonky wrote:Give Princess Mononoke a run. Hmmm. Most intriguing. I shall look more into Miazaki. I've just been going on casual observation, I haven't really had cause to investigate until now. Thanks!

Re: Derivation Inspiration
You might enjoy Castle in the Sky, Naussica of the Valley of the Wind, and Mononoke Hime, as previously mentioned. But too might also look into Porco Rosso for its flying and the protagonist being a pilot cursed into being , well, a were-pig. Its got sea plane Pirates and everything.
And then there's Howls Moving Castle and that-one-where-shes-like-Alice-in-Wonderland, but both these last two are very Euro/Nipponese Mythos-mashup and not to every ones liking.
And of course we should mention Totoro. Totoro is the , hmmm, how to phrase this?
Dude is big. He's furry, he lives in the forest, he's a real good guy- what I'm struggling with in describing it is some years after it came out there came upon the scene this 'furry' craze and somewhere and Im sure hes having something sacrificed to him on a shrine. (insert rolling eye emoticon)
Despite the fact that the two main leads are a teen and her bratty younger sister, it's a pretty decent film.
CATBUS!
Funny, it didn't dawn on me until recently that pre-puberty Atsali and her spud-bud Castela have some parallels in Totoro.
Miyazaki, like Paul, likes a good strong female protagonist, even if during the course of the story they sent always the strongest moment to moment.
Lastly if anyone thinks 'its all cartoons, for kids' , well I direct them to 'Grave of the Fireflies.

Thx Atomic.
Kiki is a seemingly hard choice to recommend, one Man to another and esp given the examples G gave, etc- but upon reflection I call poppycock on my own self;
It s one of my favorite films actually, esp in a Chicken Soup role.
Spirited Away, that was the title I couldn't recall..

"The Cat Returns" is fun, and has a great English voice cast in the dubbed version Vary Elwes, Peter Boyle, Tim Curry, Rene Rene Auberjonois, Elliott Gould...
(It's not a Miyazaki film, but it is definitely a Studio Ghibli film that bears his stamp.)
