Leonard Nimoy, ‘Star Trek’s’ Spock, Dies at 83

Not two hours ago I was digging up some Blooper Reel footage of DeForest Kelley (as an aging Dr. McCoy) and thinking "Dee is gone... Jimmy Doohan is gone... but Shatner and Nimoy are still with us."

Sometimes, just by luck, I get to be amazingly wrong.

The only memorial I can think of is his coffin needs to be taken up into space and shot out in true Trek fashion.

The very first image I ever saw on television was of him. I was in my mid-teens, and there was a television on display in the window of a shop that I was passing by. There was no sound. I was rather puzzled trying to figure out the scenario: it started out with a close-up of Spock sitting in a barren-looking room and calmly talking, and then shifted to Kirk and McCoy replying and acting agitated. I was left with a rather vague impression that perhaps the character with the odd ears and eyebrows was some sort of a demon. A demon in a realm of really tacky clothing fashions.

IIRC, the cast of ST:TOS were quite convinced that those uniforms were Satanic.

The velour shunk, every time it was washed. It never fit right.

They had to remove the badges before washing the costumes, because the velour shrinking made them look funny if they were washed with the badges (which didn't shrink) stitched on.

Because of my mothers fondness for Sci-Fi, fantasy and the world of the woo-woo, I was exposed to Star Trek on it's original run on NBC as a very small child. It caused a lot of weird Deja-vu moments when I started watching it again as it hit syndication in the area I was at. I have a fondness for the original that any of the sequels never achieved. Part of how I approach situations is dividing it into a Kirk response or a Spock response. Fortunately, I tend toward the Spock response with a side of McCoy.
He will be missed.

I was little when my sister introduced me to Star Trek. We watched them all in order, then we watched TNG. Those series were probably what first planted the seed in my brain that got me so interested in Sci-Fi, and that got me on the path to becoming an engineer.
I never would have read anything my Asimov or Heinlen, probably wouldn't have gotten interested in computers, science, space, cars, planes, videogames, ano (web)comics.
Basically, Star Trek started me on the bath of being the nerdy, geeky, dorky kid I am today.

I haven't a clue how I'd have turned out otherwise. Thanks, Mr. Nimoy.

Between my genetic predisposition for emotional outbursts and the abuse heaped upon me in school, I count Spock as one of the reasons I never became a school shooter. This event was inevitable, but not the end of the story. I hope he prospers in the next chapter of his life.
