A million rare documents damaged in Moscow library blaze
Agence France Presse wrote:A fire that ripped through one of Russia's largest university libraries is believed to have damaged over one million historic documents, with some describing the fire as a cultural "Chernobyl."

The blaze, which started Friday and was still not completely out on Saturday evening, ravaged 2,000 square metres (21,500 square feet) of the Institute of Scientific Information on Social Sciences (INION) in Moscow, which was created in 1918 and holds 10 million documents with some dating back to the 16th century.

Now that is a horrible event. That is a loss that is incalculable. One can hope that they had made digital copies of the work that was held there. But at least there did not seem to be any loss of life (at least none mentioned in the article).

when our own L.O.C. hasn't (yet) made e-copies of a lot of our own stuff, then i doubt that they have either...

and if they did, I hope they kept copies (of their copies) off site :shock:
