Yes, she was paying attention, but now has lost it.

So, is she crying because she was yelled at, or because a huge hairy eight-legged Tina's Point Of View bit her in the conscience?

Hopefully, a little from column A and a little from column B.

How in the world is Monica making the mistake of thinking she would know how to react? I must be missing something here.

I have to wonder if this school give ANY instruction in social interaction... For as bad as Monica sounded... she's right. Kids have no clue what real social interaction is anymore. Call them on it and they get all bent out of shape.
That being said, what happened to Monica trying to be more of a role model for 5 year olds?
And where is poor Tina?

She's not dealing with a five-year-old.
================
That said, Monica is taking the wrong tack - angrily lecturing a freaked-out fifteen-year-old.
But Monica has no background in dealing with teens and Atsali has very little experience of the Outside World as yet - a frighteningly-multivariant situation just fraught - fraught, i say!

Monica has no patience for any fault in others that may in any way apply to herself.

She's dealing with a 5 year old who is 10 years older. (Poor frontal lobe)

Indeed
Monica is taking a page out of Tanta Phix's Book of Tough Love for the Paranormal Youth here.

Who knew insensitive was contagious? Now Monica is doing it to Sali. You know this is a bit unlike both of them. I wonder if the change in Tina is causing this? She used to calm people down, make them feel good, and give a nudge or two. Today Tina is feeling off. Might that not mean she is affecting others negatively rather than positively? Could her whole vide have changed because of the dream? Monica's rant is way over the top. Sali being reduced to tears is not normal. Usually she just withdraws into herself. The two of them talking about Tina as if she is not there. Just maybe this is not a natural event and is being triggered by Tina accidentally or unknowingly?

I'd venture to say Monica's most recent teacher is kind of the same.
Phix's lecture of Shelly and M feels a lot like this.

I've added further thoughts to that post.
I don't think it's the same as Phix's little session with Monica and Shelly - M & S could be expected to know better and Phix knows it.
Atsali really can't be expected to react calmly when Monica drops that on her. Be nice if she
did, but it's asking a lot.
And remember - Monica's first reaction to Tina explaining themself to her resulted in a mini-freakout and use of the "z" word, too. And Monica had known Tina for years and knew she wasn't horrible or scary. Atsali had never clapped eyes on her until about five seconds before Monica laid it on her cold.
As Paul says - Monica is dropping hard on Atsali for doing something she's ashamed that she did.

Code: Select all
/* From many personal experiences */
Start crying
Begin:
x = random(5);
case x in
0) Realize that you hurt someones feelings.
Have some empathy for them.
1) Realize you disappointed someone you idolize.
Think you are worthless.
2) Be shocked that someone is yelling at you.
Get scared.
3) Think Monica will not forgive you.
Think you have lost a friend.
4) Realize how self centered you are.
Think you really are dumb and worthless
end case
Get overwhelmed with emotions
Cry some more
Repeat until you can no longer physically cry.

Option A: Being held accountable for outlandish and unacceptable behavior in direct, declarative terms.
Option B: Inspiring change in others buy persuading them that certain behaviors are outlandish and unacceptable.
Option C: A short, sharp, shock. Explanations come later, if at all.
What's to be tolerated, and how do you tolerate it? Masking consequence from behavior does nothing to change the behavior, but you must always consider the context of the event and the abilities of the malefactor to learn from the situation.
This is a culture clash compounded by misdirected assumptions about maturity. M went overboard, but perhaps not unjustifiably so. She's defending her friend Tina, and Atsali is clueless for a variety of reasons, the least of which sheer social ignorance and insecurities galore.
Flag on the play -- Offsetting penalties. Regroup and try again.

Bravo! That's one of the of the most excellent, complete-and-succinct bits of impromptu coding I've seen in quite a while!
Would that be a "disfunctional language" you used, perhaps?

Yeah but -
I see the difference (as i said) being that Shelly and Monica are supposed to be adults, who Know Better.
(Notice, i say "supposed to")
I'm finding myself remembering Warren Oates' line to Daniel Stern: "You're supposed to be stupid, son. Don't abuse the privilege."

Oh, I think we've just seen you toss another Chekhov's Breadcrumb, sir!
Now we get to wonder, for the next five years or so, just what as-yet-unseen young character will appear someday, so that a more-mature Atsali can be harshly firm with his/her thoughtless behavior, and pass the pattern down the generations yet another time! The gift that "keeps on giving!"
No worries... you know we'll be here looking for it. (And, of course, if it happens it'll probably catch us all by surprise via another of those bootlegger plot turns).
EDIT: I just recalled that years ago (shortly after first meeting Monica?) Phix commented that she wasn't terribly impressed with the person she had been when she was younger. I wonder if this means that she, too, had her hindquarters chewed upon by an elder after having acted thoughtlessly in some fashion?

When is Monica going to start wheezing, turning blue, and finally keel over? Didn't we see this scene played out by Atsali (as Monica) and Castella (As Atsali)?
