DVDVerdict wrote:The one really interesting extra is a sneak peek behind the dubbing process as Jackie dubs his lines in English. Here at least we learn a bit about Jackie's true feelings on American audiences, English in general, and the dubbing process—but if you really want to enjoy New Police Story stick with the Cantonese track and English subtitles. It's great that Jackie does his own dubbing but it appears that none of the other actors do. Watching the English dub is the equivalent to watching pantomime narrated by hardcore caffeine addicts, and that's just not right
.
From the
DVDVerdict.com review of Jackie Chan's
New Police Story.
(Applies particularly to anime...)

I agree on a bad dub, it's unbearable. Watch
City of Lost Children but avoid the 'British' dub. Listen in French and read it.

Hidden Tiger, Crouching Dragon was much more enjoyable with subs because the tone and inflection of the dialog was as revealing as the words.

Is there ever an instance in which Dubbed is superior to Subbed?

The only advantage dubs have over subs - and bear in mind, this is strictly my own opinion - is that one tends to miss what's actually happening in the scene because one is too busy reading the dialogue. Besides that, subs are superior.

Gotcha. Since i'm a line-at-a-time reader and don't really need to look directly at the subtitles most of the time, i don't.

The Persuaders!, but you might have to be German-speaking and/or from a German-speaking middle-European country to fully appreciate it...
np: Boards Of Canada - Reach For The Dead (Tomorrow's Harvest)

How is The Persuaders better dubbed in German?
(One of my favourite obscure TV series, BTW)

Lest we forget:
What's Up, Tiger Lily?
Sample dialog:
Phil Moscowitz: No bullets? Ah, but if all of you in the audience who believe in fairies will clap your hands, then my gun will be magically filled with bullets!

One of those marvelous movies, for which the dropping of acid is both very useful and entirely redundant.
I've always been fond of: "It's Wing Fool, you fat! I mean, it's Wing Fat, you fool!"
