I always told people that we were looking for the elusive spondulix. It'd been seen in the area, and if they could catch one in a bag (you hand out burlap sacks), there were people that would really like to have it.
Bill Fields fan?
No idea who that might be. I've just always liked reading, and that's a classic phrase from film noir and 40's novels. I mean, if you want to catch a cute tomato, you've got to have plenty of the spondulix.

The great William Claude Dukinfield - W.C. Fields
I forget which film.

Honestly, I can't remember that I've really watched more than one of his films.

Now what AM I going to do with my collection of sundries, notions, knick-nacks, tchotchkies, and conversation pieces?
I would suggest that you ought to sell them to your local neighborhood floccinaucinihilipilificator, but I doubt you'd get much for them.

Depends on the rag picker you picked to pick through your products.

Ah-ha.
It's from "My Little Chickadee". in which he co-starred with Mae West.
There's a story that Fields wrote all of West's dialog and she wrote all of his.
I strongly suspect that Fields' use of the phrase may well have been its origin.

Is that the one where, since they couldn't stand each other, they never appeared in the same scene?
WC was also famous for injecting oranges with gin so he could appear innocent while juicing up for the day's work...

Or a famous scene from the TV version of M*A*S*H, Muldoon says "Someone put tea in my tea cup."

And in a different scene, Klinger said "Somebody put gasoline in my gasoline!"

One of my drill instructors was named Klinger. The crazy thing is, he was armor, while we were an infantry company.
