Thing is, Atsali does pick up on vocal cues. Witness how she reacted as Berdine kept nagging her about "getting a guy": the full Siren Song treatment.

I 'm not that sure.... that whole sequence shows she is just coldly 'going through the motions' to see how her siren side works, just like you would trace a program run... she does not want to talk about school, too much confusion there (too much shouting, as she cannot feel the emotions with it! )

berdine is just getting emotional due the her hopes for atsali and the siren song...
