Badly told.
I consider myself a moderate conservative... but I share this view of
Mallard.

Ted Ralls is pretty much the same, from the other side.

Local paper ran Mallard Fillmore for several years, ostensibly as a counterweight to Doonesbury. Both strips have since been dropped.
I was surprised one day when Mallard was actually funny. Not so funny that I can remember the punch line, though.
We were always taught that "F@#% 'em if they can't take a joke" is a bedrock principle of democratic discourse, but Mallard is just bad. A disgrace to the fine tradition of anthropomorphic duckdom in the graphic arts.

"Doonesbury" actually manages to be genuinely funny at least once or twice a year.

Trudeau's humor has always been extremely dry. So dry that you need to drink a full glass of water after you read one of his strips. His stuff was good in the pre-Reagan era, before his "hiatus"; since then... it's turned into a freakin' soap opera.
Fillmore is essentially the Rush Limbaugh of comic strips. Ergo, I don't follow it.

And, most recently (the "even bigger hiatus") it's in replay mode almost all of the time (except for the occasional Sunday color strip). The timeline has just gotten up to where Rick and Joanie have realized that they're pregnant with He Who Shall Become Sorkh Razil. I don't think it's known whether Trudeau will ever take the strip back to a full-time thing, as far as new material goes.

If I had to assign a single adjective to Mallard Fillmore, I'd probably say "mean-spirited".
I've never really understood the author's decision to name his cartoon after a man who is generally considered one of the least-effective American presidents, who wasn't actually ever elected president in the first place, whose own party refused to nominate for re-election, whose party disintegrated in discord after it lost that election, and who then joined the political arm of an anti-Catholic, anti-immigrant movement (the "Know-Nothings").
I suppose the alliterative pun was too much to pass up.

Ok - how about a comic revolving around a reticent, conservative, crime-fighting Chinese President: Kato Coolidge!
