And if that was the case, said personage could also have been the one to let the researchers know about the Blackthorn in the first place... knowing what effect it could have on the fae, and seeing it as a way to get back at them.

Whatever the case, there's obviously quite a lot of untold story behind the creation of Castela. Presumably we'll gradually find out more. Eventually. Maybe.

I... I'm not sure I believe that. Because otherwise maple trees wouldn't have survived very well before we were tapping them for sap. Seeing as a bunch of them explode in the springtime.
...and the ones that didn't... Survived and passed on their not-so-explody genes. Which would probably result in maple trees that didn't produce much sap. Which would kill the maple syrup industry before it ever got started.

Ok, I gave in and googled exploding maple trees and found out that was an April fools thing.
So I don't know if I've just been tricked by Typeminer, or if Typeminer was tricked.

Yup. I've been had. By a 10-and-1-month-old April Fools gag, no less.
In surgery, we send 'newbies' looking for ;
1) an 'Otis' elevator
2) a 'Puget' sound
3) buckets of steam (for the autoclave)
4) metric orthopedic mallets
5) sterile fallopian tubes
... and I still believe somebody needs to go spelunking in Atsali's 'booby cave' to find the missing toys...

Yeah, it was an extinction-awareness benefit performance.
Most authorities think the rare ivory-billed woodpecker is now extinct, but a few folks have reported sighting them deep in southern swamps.
The ebony-billed woodpecker was never as plentiful as the ivory-billed (estimated at 5/7 as many). Descriptions are somewhat discordant, but most records agree its bill is sharp and flat. There have long been rumors of breeding pairs in the swamp behind a rural bar hereabouts.

I'm thinking (and hoping) that Castela merely dropped it in surprise. She was holding it with the left hand, while the damage to the tank was done with the right hand. It is conceivable that she dropped it, and hasn't picked it back up yet, with all the excitement.
