Any attack on Calista may be seen by some fae as an attack upon their entire kingdom. Consider also, that this is a very public attack, witnessed by everyone in the area, not a quick exchange in a mostly deserted hallway as happened earlier with Calista and Atsali. Regardless of how Calista reacts there may be royalists that will act on their own to avenge this affront. Even if Castela is immune to fae magic, what about Atsali and Katherine, are they likely to escape unharmed?

Could it be someone had an unpleasant encounter with fairies?

Perhaps got thrown away by them?

This is what suddenly came to mind to me today - She was a "fae creation". Unlike the gossamers that Cricket made to be her friends, Castela was a plant come to life - and when the fae or whoever who "made" her couldn't control her (or killed one of them?), they dumped her off at the orphanage.

She isn't a leader yet. Not sure how one would be able to lead a people with such a reputation for sociopathy. They seem to need no excuse to act out, and Calista's misery is already other people's problems. But in any case, Calista has never had any friends to rally to her, as the mermaids' reactions seem to corroborate her story.

I think her "subjects" would just stay back and laugh. She's already been left to the discipline of the wider paranormal world without complaint:

Confinement, or Jaguar Girl... or Tartarus.

The only person not present that is coming to aid Calista is named Monica Villarreal.
