If so, the rule-of-rhyme suggests she's an honest one.

Young Castela, silver eater.
Liked Atsali, wouldn't cheat her.

And, since I pointed out some time back that "Sirens is golden", we may have a true precious-metal duo here for Katherine to take home. Quite noble of her, indeed!

I'm curious... Why does everyone say that she's crying "vines"? to me it looks like the lightning bolts you get from either a Tesla Coil, or maybe those glass globes that have a plasma ball inside that changes how the lightning disperses when you put your hand up to the glass itself... and as for her skin "cracking"... nope, it's just an optical illusion from the way the artwork was drawn, but it's actually just the lightning bolts emanating from her eyes, so they're concentrated there, thus making her skin look "cracked"

if i remember my movie scenes correctly, i think a good visual would be Halley Berry's character "Storm" from the first? X-Men movie, in particular when she was battling the frog guy (no clue who it was any more, saw the movie a long time ago... CRS sucks!)

@Paul! could we get a confirmation about our theories about Castela's visuals? or will it be revealed in-comic sometime?

While we won't really know until Paul tells (or shows) us, this entry for Castela in the Wikipedia gives us a good clue.
"Castela is a genus of thorny shrubs and small trees in the family Simaroubaceae. Members of the genus are native to the Americas, especially the tropical regions. The generic name honours the French naturalist René Richard Louis Castel."

Considering Paul's penchant for rethinking and reworking mythology, let's look at a nature spirit associated with trees.
"A dryad (Δρυάδες, sing.: Δρυάς) is a tree nymph, that is a female spirit of a tree, in Greek mythology." - Dryad, Wikipedia

By reading a little further in the Wikipedia article we discover the Dryads are associated with oak trees, and Meliai are associated with apple trees. It is not such a stretch to see Castela as a nature spirit associated with thorny bushes or trees.

So if Castela is a nature spirit similar to Dyrads and Meliai then it does not take much to see her emotional outburst as "crying" thorny vines. Likewise just as Atsali is portrayed with wings (of a siren) it should not be very difficult to picture a thorny nature spirit sporting a pair of thorns (even if they look like a demon's horns).

Interesting theory. Thorns can indeed look like horns up close.

Indeed... I agree that she's crying thorn bushes... so maybe those aren't cracks on her skin... maybe it is a kind of clinging vine that pours from her eyes and stays close to the skin for the most part? If allowed to continue crying, if offered a shrubbery by the knights who say 'ni!' Kath could answer, "No thanks, I already have one!"

*skips out humming "thup thup thup thup thupthupthupthupthupthup..."

What I found interesting was the only one wearing shoes was the thorny girl, Atsali and Katherine are both barefoot.

Yanno how some people have Angels/Devils for a conscience? I have a Dark Elf ShadowKnight and a Half Elf Ranger for mine. The really bad part is when they agree on something.

Whereas mine is a Paladin with a Tree Elf mother and a Sorcerer father . Sure gits confuzalating at times..but I think that's true for all mixed breeds.

Well, this is consistent with what we've seen happen to the characters "today". Kath lost her boots when Atsali snagged her out of the air. Atsali spent most of the adventure barefoot (she'd had her bird-foot morph in effect when Kath first met her, and at least once or twice more after that; kinda hard to keep shoes on through the form-changes). She was barefoot when 'ported back to the orphanage from the Library, and when sitting on her bed musing. Castela is the only one of the three we've seen wearing shoes recently.

So, this says to me that (1) Katherine didn't bother to take the time to go home and put shoes on, before going to get Atsali out of Durance Vile, and (2) Paul pays attention to the details and continuity.

The former point is consistent with how urgently Katherine seemed to be concerned about Atsali, and the latter, of course, comes as a surprise to no one. :)

I am still wondering if they can go translucent or if that is a drawing reference left behind.

Those aren't shoes. She's wearing her nightgown, bathrobe, and bedroom slippers.
And Pickle is a cute nickname. It's been used in my family, too.

The happier Castela gets, their more transparent her horns become.

Thank you for telling us. Now I am sure that her species is a pure creation of yours (and a cute one too).

The wiki page could use some work, but it's free.
