Yeah, as trope-ish as it may sound, I'm betting on that last option myself.
Remember, she was taunted at the orphanage for having killed someone when she was younger, which was why her parents "abandoned" her.
It might be that an attack on Atsali was a trigger - it turned the potted plant on the shelf into a "murder baby."
