I'm also apparently known as a hard worker here, which is a shock, because I have a hell of a time getting things done. He has a reputation for not doing what he's supposed to, like disappearing from his department or using his phone for personal calls while on the clock and on the sales floor.

I'm going to caution you to avoid having the very real feelings you are having, from making decisions for you. (Well, there's something wrong with my grammar, but you get the point.)

It can be very easy to get into a action/reaction cycle where 'it just keeps Happening!' which leads to 'Enough is Enough!' and spur of the moment actions and comments.

Lots of examples of how to deal include that old saw 'Count to Ten'; seems pretty simplistic, works though.

We are all of us, continually throughout life, learning how to deal.

Think about your goals; do you just want the pain to stop or do you want a happy and productive life. Most of the time.

Something you might want to try: don't go to management and complain about him. Instead, go to management and ask for clarification about your duties and responsibilities.

Ask them to make it clear to you just when you are required, expected, encouraged, discouraged, or forbidden from "covering" departments outside the one to which you are formally assigned, or performing duties for which you have not been formally trained. There's probably some sort of employee policy manual... ask them to point out the relevant sections.

They may ask why you're asking. You don't need to name names (unless specifically asked), but could simply say that you've gotten a bunch of requests-for-assistance of this sort from various different departments, and don't feel comfortable taking on tasks which conflict with your primary assignment unless you've been specifically authorized/trained.

If you do it that way, you're on record as "wanting to do the right thing", by the book.

In many companies, there is a formal or informal expectation that the more junior people become "George" - the guy who gets assigned the tasks that nobody else really wants, or is expected to be at the beck-and-call of anyone who wants or needs assistance. You need to know just how far that tradition applies, in your workplace. If it's expected of you (as stated by Management), you should be willing to do as expected. If you're being asked to do things which actually interfere with your primary duties, though, then it's in your best interest that Management is aware that this is happening.

And, if you're being asked to do any machinery-operation or materials-handling for which you haven't been properly trained, I think you should refuse until you get a proper authorization to do so through your chain-of-command. State and Federal regulations have a lot to say about employee and customer safety, and you have a right to have proper training and supervision for any work that could involve a safety hazard.

Well, see, management is always saying that I should focus on the orders first, and this guy knows they want me to deal with those before doing anything outside of my department. He only got the position because there was no one else to fill it. He was originally in hardware. He went from being a regular hardware associate to being the department head of lumber, with no prior experience in lumber.

I've been here longer, but the reason I'm not in a higher position is that it's harder to move from the lot to anywhere else.

All I really gotta do is ask someone in management if they can tell him to leave me alone and let me work. Politely, of course.

So my monthly shipment of Baen books arrived Friday, and it includes Sword of the South, my brother's new fantasy novel - first in a new series that he's spinning off his Bahzell books.

Bahzell, the "orc paladin" as Dave's editor/publisher Toni Weisskopf described him prior to the publication of the first in that series (Oath of Swords), is an important character, but he's not the main protagonist.

Anyway. Our heroes arrive in a tough riverport town where even hradani champions of Tomanak walk careful with one hand on their purse and one on their dagger-hilt - which is a "wretched hive of scum and villainy" near the river, at least, with districts where the Watch only go in squads.

And Dave describes what they see:

Rough-trousered rivermen rubbed against prosperous merchants in silks, hucksters, food vendors and itenerant entertainers. They were all there - from veiled lady to corner prostitute, from mime to beggar to magistrate's clerk.

I like the assumptions in that last clause.

Wow. I'm a fan of his work. Haven't read his fantasy work, but I've got an entire shelf occupied by the Honor Harrington series.

Someone sent me a pirate copy of the audio book of On Basilisk Station, and at the first opportunity I bought almost the entire series at once. True story.

+ 5 internet points, because I thought that was pretty cool of you to think ahead and be understanding about that.

I suggest that sort of thing anyway.

The only other series of his that I've read is the Safehold series. Oh, there was also the Honorverse spinoff with Stephanie Harrington, but I've only read the first of those so far. Can't find the others.

I read everything he writes that isn't Honorverse(not my cuppa). I loved the hilarious internet banter he and John Ringo had when "We Few" was finished.
It's the main reason when I meet authours, I generally chatter about generic, safe topics, some stammered praise...then run away squeeing...before I realise I either forgot my book at home, or forgot to remember to get it signed when i got home.

This time, I got all the way home before I remembered I left my book at the signing location(I managed to remember all my new books, just not my old hardcopy of "Apocalypse Troll")...broke every speed record known to get there before they closed and pray nobody stole it.

Management hands me the book, I thank them, and leave. When I got home, I decided to read it again. Inscribed under the dust jacket was, "Forget something?"...And his signature.
What made it over the top amazing was he remembered enough about me to inform management so when I came back, I could claim my book(and dummy me leaving my receipt from there inside being used as a bookmark prolly didn't hurt management).

My ex has the book, and no context. I have no book, but the amusing memory.

He prolly won't remember the incident, but I'll never forget it.

That sounds like him.

Pic TWO, by my count has Eight hooves, two of them being Back Legs...

Both have eight - eight being the proper number since ponies don't have arms.
