I seem to recall it might be right or left.
Yes and No, as I recall most of them are Asymmetrical on a 'same as everybody else' pattern, but there where a few that were 'Left-Handed', so to speak...

I believe that at one point in The Mote in God's Eye it was expressly stated that there were a few "left-handed" moties, which is what leads me to believe that in the normal motie, the gripping hand was on the right.

And I should have specified ". . . believe it's normally on the right."
