I bought a new toy!

Post by Fairportfan »

So KEH Camera gave me $205 trade-in on the Olympus, and i bought a Nikon D3200 (for $419 plus tax and shipping) from them.

It's used, of course, but they graded it "LN-" ("Like New Minus", which means "showroom-condition-but-not-brand-new" in their parlance), and it carries a six-month repair or replace warranty.

Last week, before i knew if they were going to give me enough as a trade-in to make the deal feasible, they had two factory-refurbed units for the same price; those were gone yesterday when i did the deal.

Also, one of them was harlot red.

WalMart lists the black D3200 at $499.95, and the Incredibly Ugly Steal-Me-First one for $599.95.

I guess the extra hundred covers the cost of picking and squeezing all those wild uglies.

KEH also had a package deal on a refurbed camera for $459 that included a bag, a 4 gig memory card and a couple other ancillaries, but the extra $40 was a deal-breaker.

After i made the deal with KEH, i checked on line and discovered that Office Depot had a special going on a Lexar 32 gig card for $17.99, $32 off their regular price. I ran right down to OD and bought one.

It's supposed to arrive tomorrow.

A wildly favourable online review (by an author with whom i have one small philosophical difference that is totally unimportant in this context) can be found here.

Note my characterisations of the red model.

The red one isn't a camera - it's jewelry. "Look what I have and you don't."

At least, as you noted, it will catch the eyes first. And also the machinations of the sticky-er fingered types...

But, if they used really cheap paint, it'll rub off on the thief's fingers, and ...

...

... nope, can't do it. Unsportsmanlike to shoot a sitting duck like that.

I read a book about selecting and maintaining an acoustic guitar some years ago.

One chapter was about, among other things, cases:
When you buy a Martin guitar, it comes with a beautiful Martin-branded, fitted hardshell case that will protect and preserve it very well indeed.

Unfortunately, this case is also marked "Steal me first" in invisible lettering that only thieves can see.

So what you do is you go top a pawnshop or somewhere like that, and you buy an old, scuffed-up cheap guitar case. Put a couple of pillows in it to brace it, and toss it down a flight of stairs a couple of times. Mend it with duct tape.

Carry your baby in that, and only desperate thieves will bother with it.

Which reminds me. How many of us recognise the names "Republic" and "Braniff"?

Republic... Oh, you mean North Central Airlines!

I actually took a flight on them once - I think it was to Detroit from MKE.

It's from the album One Million Lawyers and Other Disasters from 1985.
