If you don't get it right off hand, well, there's always the MAN pages...

:o  :?: :!:

Sure, that's an excellent idea. We really didn't need those gigabytes of disk space, or the CPU cycles to use the system. Weird, non-deterministic behavior, erasure of random files, the occasional explosion of a peripheral? Nothing to worry about.

(Might as well stick the microphone right in front of the speaker, crank up the volume all of the way, and then shriek out "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the top of your lungs... in Romanian.)

What I like about xkcd is that when I don't get the joke--I know that the joke isn't the problem.

Thanks, Dave!

Not up on Linux very much, but I do like the origin stories and abbreviations used as commands.

A fun one is BIFF - for Bark If Forward Found, regarding a mail notification causing an alert. Woof!

The commands are much easier to remember if you know the mnemonic behind them.

For those less linux-literate:

What he's doing is telling the job-scheduling service "cron" (useful for running, e.g., automatic backups, integrity checks, and available-update checks) that if it, or any of the programs it runs, or certain other programs that run as or by services, want to send him a message, that message should replace certain configuration information for the job-scheduling service. Even though it may not make absolutely no sense to that service - and if it does make sense, it's anyone's guess what the result will be.

Does anybody think this sounds like a good idea?

Although I am not familiar enough to be sure, I'm thinking something of a recursive/endless loop kind of situation... I also noticed you posted the same post the following day, which may be a hint about what the result would be.

I'm guessing I'll see if I'm right, by whether you post the same post in a new thread tomorrow...

Then again, seeing as you later posted in that second thread, saying:
TazManiac wrote: Mon Apr 19, 2021 9:12 pm I really don't know how I got two copies of my original post...
Maybe that second thread wasn't indicative of anything after all... Although it's not a double post, since there is a good 30-some hours between the two...

Then again, maybe you're trying to deflect, with that other post... That would be very devious of you...

Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out.
