Windows 10 Question

Post by Atomic »

Having searched Teh Interwebz to no avail, perhaps someone around here knows how to Permanently remove IE and Chrome icons from the task bar. They keep re-appearing after 20 minutes or so (I haven't timed it) despite:
  • Direct "Unpin from Taskbar" attempts
  • Removal from <user> AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Quick Launch/User Pinned/Taskbar
  • Removal from <Admin> AppData/ etc
  • Removal using Admin account
  • Nothing in <Default> or <Owner>
  • Nothing in Startup
  • Nothing in RunOnce (registry)
Anybody have a clue?

I don't have an IE icon on my taskbar, but I do have Chrome, so there's that...

Not sure if there's an extension that needs to be futzed with in the registry.

I’m on the road right now and don’t use it everyday, but the first thing I thought of was ‘lock the Task Bar’, even though it doesn’t do what it used to... I’ll dig around this evening.

Suggestion: O&O's Shut Up Ten. It does have an option that allows you to Disable automatic downloading manufacturers' apps and icons for devices.

Yeah, first thing I did after removing them - nada. Lock the Task Bar prevents it from being expanded or moved, not freezes the contents, alas.

Microsoft knows you want those icons there. Why would anyone ever think otherwise?

(This is part of the reason I'm running Linux, by the way.)

That’s a new one.

I’ve never run into that. My best guess would have been to uninstall with Revo, but you can’t kill IE, to the best of my knowledge. You can only lock it in the cupboard under the stairs and tell it to pretend it doesn’t exist.

OK, I'm hampered by:

- Being way out in the Boonies right now, at the threadbare end of bandwidth... &

- I tried to boot into my dual-booting laptop, the one I converted recently from spinning Hard Drive w/ Linux & Win 7 to Linux & Win 10 on an SSD HD-
only to discover of the two Admin login accounts I'd created, I can't seem to recall the correct password spelling of either...

(insert Homer Simpson 'Doh!')

So, I'm going to give it another try, before I resort to breaking myself back into my own house so to speak, but, BUT-

lets keep in mind: Win 10 might have IE still, in there somewhere, but the current Big Blue 'E' is a slightly different program/browser called 'Edge'.

just-so-we're-on-the-same-page...

Okay.

I work on these buggers every day. I've never heard of them becoming re-pinned.

Anyway -

Try that.

Don't use Chrome?

That's my solution.

FWIW, the problem seems to have solved itself due to a series of USB error messages leading to a visit to the computer fixit shoppe and a clean install of Win 10.

Bleah, but no similar problems so far!
