Just was looking at gins yesterday, and found that Aviation is also a brand. No idea whether it's any good.

I was picking up a gift for a friend who's fond of Hendrick's.

Hope the Monin does not disappoint. Please keep us updated. Because, science!

My new fave place came through! I now have my Creme de Violette!

Not Rothman & Winter, but Giffard. Same gorgeous violet colour, same magnificently violet floral scent.

I got excited and put the wrong liqueur in it the first time, and got Pink gin.
The second time was too violet, but if I have any more of these, I'll do more than forget to photograph the finished drink.

It's a great chemistry experiment. The Lemon Juice, Gin, and Maraschino liqueur mix together and turn from yellow, clear, and violet separately to blended a gorgeous sky blue.

I can't begin to tell you how gorgeous it is. Here's the picture I did before sampling.

Why yes I own lace handkerchiefs, don't you?

There are a few classics that use it other than the Aviation, like the Blue Moon. More modern ones like Blue Angel, Brazen martini, Triumph, Union Jack...

From the flip-side of that same coin, I made a Blue Moon last night(yes, I'm hopelessly in love with gin drinks).

Blue Moon (original)
1/2 ounce lemon juice
2 ounces London Dry gin 1/2 ounce
Crème Yvette

I used lime juice(just a change up on citrus, and since I eas out of lemons anyway...),
Bombay Sapphire(I'm partial to the softer flavours in the Bombay that kinda muddle with the Violets, compared to the sharpness of London),
Giffard's crème de violette(Yvette has blackberries, red raspberries, wild strawberries, cassis, honey, orange peel, and vanilla. And I'm allergic to it(strawberry allergy, real severe), so yeah, haven't had it in years).
Fill shaker with ice cubes and add everything in. Shake well...maybe develop a new sexy dance to go with.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a candied lemon twist.

Anyway, I was holding my drink and hearing all the obnoxious music and unwitty banter from the frat jerks outside, I was just dying to put on a jazz disc and make it all go away.

So the drink effects the music.

This does at times seem to be true, but for me it's largely because I feel wrong drinking some things without the right musical accompaniment...hence my belief that (at least for me) the music I'm listening to affects what I can/will drink. That said, I might have been willing to drink that concoction without an appropriate background soundtrack. :)

This.
Gin drinks always makes me want Jazz. It's also the only one I've never gotten drunk off of. Vodka is a close second, but it's dependent on what I mix it with.

I like it.

For my gin darlings, this is lovely.

Having a violently violet soda. Listening to the purple one.

Diluted from a Blue Moon woth an extra dash of violette while listening to the Duke of swing.

A tab of Owsley Stanley's "purple" LSD, of course, as it is what popular myth says inspired that particular song.

Wash it down with a cup of kava.

Do remember to write when you land, OK?

Alcoholic:
Submarine Kiss

1 oz Creme Yvette topped with silver fizz

Silver fizz:
2 oz Plymouth Gin(as much as I love my Bombay Sapphire, it's botanicals soften this up a bit too much, and it needs a bit of bite with the Yvette)
¾ oz fresh lemon or lime juice
¾ oz simple syrup(spring for the cane sugar variety if you don't make your own, because standard bar syrup ruins most of these classics)
Egg white
Combine silver fizz ingredients in shaker and dry shake.
Add ice, then shake again.
Add Crème Yvette to the bottom of a champagne flute.
Fine strain and layer silver fizz over Crème Yvette...I find using a parfait spoon helps to float it.

There's also that God-awful Purple Haze Martini...lessee if I can remember it...

Jigger of Vodka
Jigger of Blue Curacao
Splash of Grenadine
Mix in iced shaker, pour into martini glass.
(Because blue and red makes purple, though how this crap makes a martini is beyond me)
Lemon-lime fizz on top.

This really is awful if you're used to James Bond grade cocktails. It's like a frat boy was on a play-date and pretended he was a bartender.

If I were going to attempt to make one worthy of that song(oh yeah wait, I did)...

1 oz Stolichnaya Vanil
1 oz Stolichnaya(100 proof if yer a masochist)
Splash of Ouzo
Dash of one of the following:
Creme de Violette,
Creme Yvette,
Monin Sirop de Violette,
or 1/4 tsp of candied Parma violets(why yes, I love Violet drinks, how'd ya guess?) soaked then stirred in a teaspoon of Vodka for a few minutes then strain out petals(or do all four for deep purple)
Sparkling wine or Champagne
A swirl of creme de coco...just a kiss.

Mix all but sparkler and creme de coco in an iced shaker.
Pour into a flute glass.
Top with champagne.
Lastly, gently stir in the creme de coco to make it hazy.

Now...'scuse me while I kiss the sky!

Non-Alcoholic

Hmmmm...

1/4-1/2 oz Monin Sirop de Curacao Bleu(imparts citrusy flavour, blue colour, no alcohol)
1/4-1/2 oz Monin Sirop de Cerise(Cherry soda syrup)
8 oz Lemonade
A swirl of creme de coco
Long Island or tall tea glass.

Add ice to shaker, then add sirops, and lemonade, shake.
Strain into tea glass, and swirl in creme de coco to make it hazy.

Other variation is to add sirops to sparkling lemonade, then stir in creme de coco.

That Purple Haze thing I did on a dare when I was younger(listed modern ingredients due to availability).

Everyone, myself included, were rather intoxicated after two glasses...and I'm no lightweight.

Sparkling beverages make for rapid intoxication.

I imagine this image would be representative of the results of my partaking in the aforementioned concoction...
