Firefox v57

Post by TazManiac »

Well, over in the Fan Art section there's been some talk re: the new version of Mozilla's Firefox web browser.
https://www.mozilla.org

I thought, since so many of us use it, and on various platforms, that it deserves it's own thread.

A few News Reports:
Mozilla's record 2016 revenue funded its Firefox Quantum browser
ComputerWorld: 'Quantum: Leap Forward or Fatal Trip?'
Bing Web Search: 'firefox v57 does not work with...'

The main thing is that it's a whole new plateau where some of the old PlugIns/Extensions no longer work or are supported.

For me the two biggest 'breaks' were NoScript and it's sibling FlashGot.

Anywho, let the b'ch'n begin...

I hate it.

I still use it because I've got about 90% of my bookmarks and crap on it, BUT...
  • Cookies Manager has gone to the wayside. That was the way I eliminated a bunch of suspect cookies that were occasionally hijacking legit sites.
  • Morning Coffee is gone as well - which is how I checked my webcomics.
  • Layout sucks rocks. I hate the square tabs.
  • BBCode extension doesn't work, so it makes all forums like this one (where I can't just go ctrl-i and bring up the italics brackets).

Blows goats.

I am very rapidly going to have t make a hard decision - use Chrome with Google staring over my shoulder, or put up with this UUUUUUGLY browser.

re: the Look & Feel of the Quantum (v57, etc): I'm thnking a lot of folks will soon be coming out either with some way to 'skin' over the top of the current v57 and/OR release their own version of Web Browser with a better 'ergonomic' front end.

Newest "feature" of Quandary v57:

It is no longer auto filling saved login information, nor is it asking if you want to save your credentials.

I had to turn off AdBlockPlus to make those work for me. The Wapsi items are Default in NoScript and things work OK.

Damn. I haven’t been on my laptop in a while - I think I’ll wait until people start saying kinks are getting worked out before I let my Waterfox update...

I've been looking over the current Defaults for 'Trusted' and I can say there are a lot of commercial web servers I don't really want Trusted. I'm looking to go through and Un-Trust them, allowing those in I want on an Ad Hoc/ Case by Need Basis, like I used to do.

I think the need to care-and-feed for it was changed to a more 'we want to make it easy for you & we know what's OK...' type default.
Now that I think about it, I'd wish for a big ol' honking button in the Settings that was labeled 'Go Manual / Advanced Mode' & let me regain more control over the defaulting to 'All Blocked unless otherwise said so...'

That said, here is another link; Whats New in v57 (Quantum Engine) - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/5 ... n=whatsnew

Hmmm . . . v57 apparently is only for 64-bit systems, since this 32-bit is up to date with v52.5.0 . . .

FYI, a while back I switched to PaleMoon which is a fork of Firefox from a few years ago. Most (not all) Firefox plugins that aren't specifically designed for the new version, work with PaleMoon.

I found PaleMoon interesting enough to add it as a third browser. Gonna try it out.

After having used it for a while, I just shrug and move on.

It is no easier or more difficult to use than previous version of Firefox. It runs faster. Win. Doesn't seem to be having any issues whatsoever with anything else, AdBlock Ultimate still works. I'm happy.

Then again, I don't go in for a whole bunch of addons other than AdBlock Ultimate and ForecastFox, so YMMV.

Follow up:

- Been using v57 across two, no, Three (Win7, Win10, 7 Linux) OSes & Android, seems OK and a bit speedier. NoScript is a bit better after being revamped to match but w/ a few patches since then.

- PaleMoon web browser seems pretty good & trial continues.

- Came across BRAVE web browser; https://brave.com/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brave_(web_browser)
Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... wser&hl=en
Apple OS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/brave-b ... 79175?mt=8
What’s under the hood of the new Brave browser?
... Then there’s Brave, a new Chromium-based browser for the ad-blocking age that would doubtless have fallen into obscurity like all the others if it weren’t for the fame of the man behind it, Brendan Eich.
It was he who invented JavaScript while working for Netscape in the 1990s before leaving to co-found Mozilla, a company he left in difficult circumstances in 2014 after only a week as CEO.
If anyone knows about browsers, it’s Eich, surely. Why another browser then?...

Thanks for recommending AdBlock Ultimate! I've updated from AdBlock Plus and much more effective and less intrusive from complaining sites.

Big problem with Brave: it won't let me log in to these forums.

Also available on iOS and Android, too. Once I get my ISP to get the idiot stick out of its ass so my WiFi will work again, I’ll download it. My current adblockers kinda suck.
