John glances at Sarge with a big grin. "I usually kept an old KaBar knife on me at all times... It's a bit of a letter opener for me nowadays. If I ever had to fly somewhere, I'd mail it to my destination. That was my minimum loadout, going to a local grocery store where I knew pretty much everyone there would be friendly. Now I don't go anywhere without the .500."

FUnny you should mention grenades.

Al won't be taking any. Heck, he isn't even going armed. Just an old guy having a quiet camping holiday with his old truck...nothing to blow up here...

#5... Maple Plain... awesome! Absolutely awesome! I cried at the end.

We have white sage growing all over the place out here- care for some? Most non-native types see it as a weed...

Yes, yes, and yes. Non-cultivated sage is a much better smudge.

It occurs to me that you missed a GOLDEN opportunity there, Al.

By taking the Iowa route, you most likely drove over a certain river...

I wrote this in the Holiday thread, then remembered you had created a thread for comments... I promptly copied my text, and deleted my post from there.

Just Old Al wrote:Her face and manner sobered, and she quoted a well-loved children's book:

"Make your choice, adventurous 'stranger',
Strike the bell, and bide the danger.
Or wonder 'til it drives you mad,
What would have followed, if you had."
Ha! A well-loved children's book indeed! And one loved by many an adult, as well... By the time I started reading the second line, I knew exactly the quote.

The Magician's Nephew, by C.S. Lewis. When Polly and Digory went and visited the world of Charn, and made it to the room with all the statues, with the bell in the middle of the room, with a small hammer to strike it with. Said bell "awoke" the queen from her frozen slumber, and set the rest of the castle to start falling apart.

I am thoroughly enjoying this latest chapter in the saga of your characters. It is touching to see how well Al is loved, even if he didn't realize it completely. I hope his journey goes well.

Just a note to mention, for some reason, I fell off the FanFic wagon- likly due in part to limited access to Intenet these days (More of a catch as catch can vs a spend the time as needed type situation...)

So I haven't even read any, inc the epic I had started to contribute to, in quite some time.

Perhaps I'll be able to in the near...

Please come on back - the more the merrier - and Al's got all new shop toys to make the Tiger even more of a firebreather.
