Re: Red Rover Comments Section:

I was wondering, seeing as I didn't think right-hand drive Range Rovers were all that popular in Rhode Island... Then again, I figured it might have been the author projecting... as I seem to recall a mention of the IRL existence of RHD vehicle(s?) in the author's stable... I would be very surprise...

Re: Red Rover

CHAPTER 6 “Good morning folks, and welcome to Brainerd International Raceway. My name is Bob Kitamura, and I’m going to be your course guide this morning.” The spare, pleasant-featured man spoke to have himself heard above the din in the training room. As well as the RE group there were two others,...

Re: Red Rover Comments Section:

1. BIR is a good two hour drive from Wayzata, and only half of that is Interstate. Sounds worth it, though my preference would be Road America. Brainerd's a nice legit road racing course. The trip there and back is part of it - the whole exercise is checking the driveability of the beast out and ba...

CHAPTER 5 The five sat at a workbench in the bay with the Range Rover. Externally and internally the car was transformed. The dust and grime were gone, and a thorough wash, polish and detailing had cleaned the prior ownership from the car. Glass sparking, paint gleaming and wheels and tyres cleaned...

CHAPTER 4 John dug out his phone and made a phone call that he hated to make. “Al, I’m in the machine shop – can I have your help here for a few minutes? Good…thanks.” Hanging up he contemplated the mess on the bench in front of him. A huge mass of aluminium in the form of a brake caliper, clearly ...

Re: Red Rover Comments Section:

Forgive the ignorance, but I was under the possibly mistaken assumption that Range Rovers from the era described shared a great deal of running gear with a certain other vehicle. This certain other vehicle sported a blue oval and had the unflattering nickname of "Exploder" due to some iss...

Meanwhile, you mean to tell me that we have poutine mines, up in Canada, and I never knew?!?!?!? My life will not have any meaning until I get to see such a wondrous place! Where the hell else do you think it comes from? Next, you'll be telling me that you think bread is bakes in ovens! It's actual...

Re: Metric vs: SAE:

Goats are a locally-sourced item so it's more down to the availability than it is for the goat type. They're like graphite packing or gasket material - one size fits all.

No pygmy goats, though - those are reserved for working on Hyundais.

CHAPTER 3 With the car on the lift the work began. The wheels were removed and stacked, and the condition of the damage evaluated. “So, ladies – what do we have?” John asked, wandering in after an hour or so. “Brakes are right buggered, Mr. MacDonald.” Blossom replied. Beth snickered, as did John. ...

CHAPTER 2 At lunch the crew sat around the refectory table. The counter was littered with pizza boxes, and the table with bottles of soft drinks. Al opened another can of Moxie as he contemplated a slice of pepperoni pizza. “The story on that Range Rover is a complex one. It’s a tale of accident, l...

Red Rover

And as a holiday offering to stimulate the masses: "Red Rover" is an excerpt from an upcoming novel from the Usual Suspects. Al, as is his bent when possible, has taken in apprentices for a Summer of hands-on instruction and immersion in engineering - specifically the hands-on dirty bits o...

Making another run to the Oort cloud this week, they have more diamond dust they want me to haul off if I bring them some DVDs and a couple of carbonaceous asteroids. So, a Best Buy run then a trip to the asteroid belt with nav direction from the Oort dwellers so I get the right asteroids. Opus, ma...

I had heard a saying on what one does, when one assumes, but I cannot bear to repeat it... Unfortunately, no, not everyone can afford to support the webcomics they like and follow... When one assumes, one makes an ass of U and me. I used to teach that to my students - it's a good way to reme...

... particularly if you have software that can search ALL the documents, for the times when you can't remember which manual something was in. That would be handy, but not usually a problem. Re: Library: Yep, if rendered to paper a couple of tons would be about right if perhaps a bit conservative. However a flood in the late eighties destroyed my engineering and personal libraries, and I've tended to replace reference materials in a digital fashion rather than in dead tree format. Piles...

Re: Wapsaholics anonymous rides again...

The traditional lapping compound for valves is emery powder in grease. Diamond dust was too expensive and unnecessary, because the valves and seats weren't that hard. Even modern valves don't need diamond dust, though AFAIK they don't use lapping compound any more because hard machining has gotten ...
